Volunteer befrienders offer social contact to people with dementia or carers of people with dementia. You'll provide companionship either in their home or in their local community, helping the person to take part in appropriate social and/or recreational activities. Your involvement aims to help people to feel less isolated and feel part of an enjoyable social relationship. This includes:

  • Visit a person with dementia or a carer of a persion with dementia on a regular basis.
  • Provide agreed opportunities to participate in social/recreational activities.
  • Build trust & companionship to enable the person with dementia or carer of a person with dementia to engage with activities safely.
  • Liaising with & report to the Befriending Manager regularly.


You will need to commit to an agreed number of hours each week or fortnight, usually the same day and time. Ideally you will be able to provide continuity over a minimum of six months.

You will be reimbursed your agreed out-of-pocket expenses, in accordance with Society policy. You will benefit from ongoing training and other development opportunities.

Best suited to:
This role does not provide personal care and you do not need any special qualifications or experience. You will need to be prepared to undergo an induction into the role and attend necessary training and similar learning activities to help you in your role. Due to the nature of this role two references and an enhanced criminal record check will be required.
