Mum's view

Name: Tiffany Matthews

Location: Fareham, Hampshire

Family: 2 daughters- 4 years and 16 months

How often do you work?
I am currently running 3 classes a week as I haven’t been open long! I plan to open more classes each term.

How does the job fit around your family life?
It works really well as I can drop my eldest daughter 2 to and from school. I am planning on taking my younger daughter along to some classes with me to save money on childcare as well.

How much time do you commit?
I teach 3 lessons a week at the moment. I teach these in the mornings and with travel and setting up time this only takes just over an hour on those days. I then spend about 4 hours or so a week replying to emails/marketing and general admin. I plan to open more classes so the time commitment will go up, but I can do this as and when it fits in with my family, which is great.

Where do you carry out your work?
I work in Fareham and Southampton in Hampshire. I hold my classes in venues within about 20 mins of my home. Parties can be further but so far haven’t been more than 30 minutes travel time by car.

Do you need a car?
I would say you need a car to travel to and from classes. Especially with props and sound system! I plan on running classes in more than one venue in a day as well so driving will make things easier and more speedy!

Do you get support/training?
Yes! I have had lots of advice and help from Claire (Tappy Toes founder). I spent three full days training with her where she went through lessons, plans and the business side of things. Since then I have had lots of questions and she is always at the end of the phone, responds quickly and points me in the right direction! We also face time on occasions so she can guide me through things.

Would you recommend this opportunity to other mums?
Teaching full time in a school was just not flexible with my daughters. I am now able to do all the ‘Mum’ things I would have missed out on and fit my work around this. I love Dance and spending time wiggling away with little ones is so much fun! I often feel like I’m not working! I'm so pleased I made the change as I have a much better work/life balance and feel happier. Thank you Tappy Toes!

Do you advertise?
Yes! I list my classes on all the popular club and parenting websites. I also advertise lots on facebook and this is where I seem to get most people to attend my classes.

Are there any downsides to the role?
I can’t really think of any downsides as I have a much better work/life balance than I did before. I just miss chatting to colleagues daily! I am quite proud of building a business by myself and feel I have learnt loads already
