How often do you work?
I tend to work term time only, with some skeleton hours during the school holidays, and also some evenings nearer to the deadlines.

How does the job fit around your family life?
Running the magazines over the last 8 years has been amazing for me and for my family. I have the flexibility to be there through school holidays or when one of the children is ill. I even get to include my children in my work as we review local shows, classes, parties and activities. My 7 year old son Logan says he never wants me to stop running a magazine!

How much time do you commit?
I work between 25 and 30 hours per week, mainly term time, but do sometimes work more hours to get a few more ads in and complete the administration I need to do to keep on top of things.

Where do you carry out your work?
I mainly work from my home office, which is really easy now the children are all at school. All you need is a phone, computer and printer to get going

Do you need a car?
If you decide to distribute the magazine yourself then yes you will need a car, however, many successful editors have a network for distributors across the territory, as they can be a large area to cover

Do you get support/training?
FREE sales support from a professional media sales agent selling advertising into your magazine for the first 6 months of its life First issue of your magazine printed FREE. A wealth of working documents including our unique, specially created, software package used to run your business. Full induction and training programme with ongoing mentoring for all areas you require

Would you recommend this opportunity to other mums?
Myself and my business partner Caryl have never looked back. In fact, we love it so much that 18 months after launching Cheshire we bought a further franchise, Families Manchester. You do not need to have all the attributes listed, or have expertise in every area as we are a wide network of people with skills across all areas, so there is always help to draw from across the families group.

Do you advertise?
As the magazine is a free magazine, you don't need to advertise. The advertising is generated through the magazine being seen in the local community coupled with dedicated advertising sales lead generation and telesales work mainly

Are there any downsides to the role?
Working on your own at home can get a bit lonely, but as I work with a business parter on two magazines, I have a partner to run ideas past and discuss our strategy, obstacles and direction. It also helps that there is a network of 34 other magazines across the country, and we all share knowledge, views and best practice. Our Head Office also provides a lot of support.
