Name: Rachel Jackson
Location: Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Family: 2 children aged 6 and 2
How often do you work?
I deliver customers orders two days a week and then spread the rest of my tasks over the remaining days, so my hours equate to around 3 to 4 days a week. In the summer months when we’re at local shows I often work weekends as well.
How does the job fit around your family life?
It works really well. A lot of my contact with customers can be done during the school day and at nap time, or in the evening after the children are in bed. I have two days where I deliver customers orders to their homes each week. My 2 year old is able to come with me in my van and many of my customers love to see her!
How much time do you commit?
On average I work three to four days per week, with the flexibility to work longer hours if there’s an opportunity to grow the business, such as attending a local event.
Where do you carry out your work?
I work from home and have an office set up. I also use my van for delivering customers orders. My franchise has a territory determined by postcodes, so I only work within this area.
Do you need a car?
Yes! The business is based on home delivery, so you must have a van and be happy driving it around the local area.
Do you get support/training?
Yes. The Franchise includes a package of initial training which is backed up by ongoing support. Franchisees are encouraged to work together and share ideas. There are regular regional meetings held with other franchisees and staff from head office where further training and best practise ideas are shared. There are also web-based training sessions that can be joined from your home computer.
Would you recommend this opportunity to other mums?
I love my business. It has allowed me the opportunity to work for myself doing something I love, whilst also looking after my young family. There are plenty of opportunities available to grow a business at a rate that works around your family life and commitments.
Do you advertise?
We meet a lot of our customers by having a stall at local events such as school fetes and village days. We also post to local Facebook pages and try to interact with pet-related groups. Our van is fully sign written, so we try to park it in prominent places when out and about, particularly when walking our own dog!
Are there any downsides to the role?
I always try to respond to my customers as quickly as possible, however, this can mean there is an expectation that I’m available all hours and at weekends, so it can be hard to get a true break! Having a dedicated business line is recommended, so you can switch your answer machine on in the evening when needed.
