Name: Rebecca Jones
Family: 2 children (7 & 3)
How often do you work?
I run classes 4 days a week (within school hours) as that is what fits in best with my family commitments. My marketing/ admin etc is usually done on a non-teaching day or on an evening at a time convenient to me. Ad hoc work (parties etc) could be on a weekend.
How does the job fit around your family life?
Running my own franchise means that I get to choose the hours and times that I work. I initially started working only 2 days a week as that matched my existing childcare commitments, but as my youngest started school I was able to add in additional classes and working time. I am able to do every school drop off and pick up and I never have to worry about holiday childcare!
How much time do you commit?
My teaching time is roughly 11 hours a week at the moment but obviously there is an awful lot that goes on behind the scenes in terms of preparation and admin. This differs week by week but as an average I probably work probably around 15 hours during term time.
Where do you carry out your work?
I run my parent & child class at local venues throughout Solihull. These range from church halls to dance studios and even a climbing centre! I also provide weekly and ad hoc sessions at local nurseries and playgroups.
Do you need a car?
Yes, a car is an absolute must as there is a large amount of props to transport each week! I would say you need a car that can comfortably fit 2 large suitcases in the boot.
Do you get support/training?
The training from Drama Tots head office is phenomenal! I feel very lucky to be part of such a supportive and enthusiastic family. From the initial comprehensive training, to all the ongoing support and encouragement, I never feel like I am working alone.
Would you recommend this opportunity to other mums?
Absolutely. It is a huge decision and not one to take lightly as it is hard work, but so rewarding and definitely the best decision I have made!
Do you advertise?
Most of my non-teaching work goes into advertising. Solihull is a very saturated market with lots of different childrens activities on offer so at all times I need to stay present in people’s minds when they are looking at something to try with their little one. I use social media daily and also advertise in local magazines, at sales events and ensure leaflets are visible in my area.
Are there any downsides to the role?
Running your own franchise makes it difficult not to take things personally when they don’t go as planned. It can be very disappointing for example when someone a nursery decides not to enter a contract with you after a trial, or if not as many people as expected sign up for a class. Managing disappointment and learning how to take positives from them is an important step in running a franchise.
