Junior Cluedo

Can you figure out who stole the cake and ate it too? The classic Whodunit detective game - specially designed for ages 5 to 8. 2-6 Players.

5 stars

The box is beautifully illustrated with all of the classic Cluedo characters gathered around a table at the scene of the crime. It really appealed to my son and he couldn't wait to get it out of the box. Comes with clear instructions, there was a few bits to put stickers on but not much more than that. It took no more than five minutes to put it together and start to play. I think it probably helped that we had all played "grown up Cluedo" before and the game was quite similar except this time there are no murders therefore making it much more child friendly. Instead we have 'The case of the missing chocolate cake'. But still featuring the usual suspects: Professor Plum, Mrs Peacock, Colonel Mustard, Mrs White, and Miss Scarlett and of course Reverend Green. My son loved this game, though he did need a bit of help the first couple of times we played filling in his game card. This was a really good quiet game. Perfect to play before bedtime for example, as it didn't seem to get Robert too excited. I expected the appeal of this game to wear off quite quickly but its been out a few times and still seems a favourite. I would be happy to recommend this game to other mums, it doesn't take long to set up and is a bit of a challenge for little minds and makes them use their initiative. Superb value for money and I have a feeling it will be played time and time again.

5 stars

I love the adult version of this game so I was intrigued to see how they would make it more child friendly. The box has all the characters on the front and my son was really keen to get going. It took me a little while to get to grips with the instructions but once we started playing everything fell into place. It became a real battle of wills to see who could get around the board and find the clues first. We all became quite secretive in trying to hide our clue sheets from each other! One of the problems with the adult game is that it can take a while to get around the board. This isn't the case with the child version, with the die having a side for you to choose any character or room to turn over and find their clue. This keeps the game quite fast moving and therefore great for smaller children too. We've played the game quite a few times including at breakfast before school! I'd highly recommend this game to other Mums.

2 stars

Alicia was not as keen to open this game as the other two - the box didn't appeal to her as much. I was confused by the instructions and I'm still not actually sure that I set it up correctly. I don't think that my daughter fully understood how to play this game, you are supposed to travel to each room to mark off items and people on your secret sheets. She again needed help marking things off and was a bit sad that was all you did look under things and mark them off. I don't think she hated the game but I think she got bored very quickly with it. I put this down to her age, I think if she was older she would enjoy the detective aspect to the game. I did enjoy playing this game but I love the original cluedo as well. I thought it was very nice that they replaced someone being killed with who drank the drink and ate the cookies. I think it is a good family game just maybe not for very young children. My daughter hasn't asked to play this game again. I would recommend this game to other mums but probably not if they had very young children ie. 5 and under - probably more suited to slightly older children.

Rumble in the Jungle

Will you be the first explorer to reach the golden monkey treasure and send it flying from it's hiding place? Crank the wheel of doom, watch your step, beware the treacherous traps and look out for the rumbling boulders as they crash down from the tree tops to knock you off the track! For 2 to 4 players. Age 5+.

2 stars

Rumble in the Jungle really appealed to my son and he couldn't wait to get it opened. It came in a really colourful and fun looking box. Unfortunately it was a bit of a nightmare to put together, extremely fiddly and as a result took quite some time to set up by which point my son had disappeared to do something else. It is also very important that the game is assembled perfectly otherwise the 'boulder' will not follow its intended route so that the game can be played properly. We did read the instructions before starting the game but also had to refer to them a couple of times whilst playing as it did get a bit confusing. Robert seemed to enjoy playing the game but it takes quite a long time to play as you seem to be constantly going back to the start - the novelty seemed to wear off quickly. It was quite disappointing and didn't really seem to keep anyone interested for long, which is a shame as it really looked like a good fun game on the packaging. After it was put back in its box its not been asked for again. I think it's fair to say that it will probably spend the rest of its life at the back of the games cupboard. I don't think I would recommend this game to any other mums, it's too fiddly and once set up just didn't seem to be much fun to play. Once set up it looked really impressive but the game play let it down.

3 stars

This is one of those games that children love but parents hate! My son's reaction was "Wow cool!" but my heart dropped as all the pieces fell out of the box. I then had a lesson from a 5 yr old in how to read instructions and put a game together. It took us quite a while to put everything together, although we have sped up with experience, but we continually have trouble connecting one of the main pieces to the board. It's a really easy game to understand and play and my son loves it. As an adult I'm not so keen and we have changed the rules because, when you land on certain squares the game is started and booby traps set off, you end up having to reset the game. This can really slows things down as they only affect your player when you stand on certain squares (so probably more effective if lots of people are playing). I'd recommend the game to others and it's a great present for birthdays etc. and probably worth the money.

4 stars

Alicia was very keen to open this game as the packaging had a very appealing picture of the game on it. It was bright and very colourful. The instructions were quite hard to follow as I had a bit of difficulty setting it up. Once set up the rules of play are easy to understand. The object of the game is to get the golden statue which my daughter absolutely loved. It was easy to understand. Alicia really liked playing rumble in the jungle and especially enjoyed all the obstacles and loved making the golden monkey pop out the box. I really enjoyed playing this game, I liked it when you have to activate the ball and I also thought the little explorer men tokens were very cute. I think its a really good family game as its an exciting fun game to play. Straight after first playing it my daughter asked to play again. She's asked to play it every other day since. I would recommend this game to other mums, its a bit difficult to set up but once it is its a lot of fun to play. I think this game is good value for money, its very interactive and really fun when you win and get to release the statue. It also looks quite impressive when set up.

What a Performance!

Can you pretend to be a monkey, make a noise like a firework or wiggle your ears? If you can't, use the magic decoder and reveal your hidden forfeit! Be a star and rise to the challenge in this all-action game of fun for all the family. Includes more than 200 exciting activities for up to four players or teams. Age 5+.

5 stars

This game came nicely boxed very colourful and looked like it would be fun but for some reason it didn't seem to appeal to my son. However I was looking after my friend's six year old girl when it arrived and she was really keen to give it a try. This game was really easy to set up and had simple and straightforward instructions on how to play. It was really simple to understand, everyone got the hang of it straight away. It turned in to a very loud game once everyone got over being quite shy at first. There is a lot of action and activity involved in this game for example you may have to pretend to be a fish or make a noise like a doorbell and the team have to guess correctly what they are. It is a really good fun game and had us in fits of giggles most of the time. Even Robert who wasn't too keen on the game to start off with really enjoyed it once we started playing. We've played it a few times now and still doesn't seem to have lost its appeal or fun factor. I would definitely recommend this game to other mums. It's linked with the national curriculum English and Maths which is a major plus point as well as being a really good fun game for all the family, even my two year old joined in. I really feel this game is great value for money and don't think this one will be consigned to the back of the games cupboard!

5 stars

What a performance - what a game! We loved this! The box is bright and inviting and my son couldn't wait to rip off the packaging and get playing. It was my kind of game, in that; it went together in 10 seconds and needed minimal instructions on how to play. It was really simple to do and we were playing the game like pros five minutes after it arrived. It has also helped my son come out of his shell miming, acting and singing in front of people. We now play it before bed instead of Cbeebies! In fact, it so much fun we are taking it away with us this weekend so we can play it with friends. I'd highly recommend it to others, the only slight downside being it's a little costly at £15.

5 stars

The game had a nice box with fun pictures on. Alicia was very keen to open it and had fun naming what the children on the box were dressed up as. The instructions were very clear and were easy to explain to my daughter. The game was easy to understand but when it came time to read the card Alicia who's only five struggled with some of them. As it was only the two of us playing and I would be the one guessing whatever action the card said, when she couldn't understand it ruined it a bit. If there was more than two people playing so someone could help the younger children read the cards it would be perfect. My daughter despite me having to read the card for her really liked playing this game. She thoroughly enjoyed using the sandtimer and really liked doing the actions and noises. She even liked the forfeits as it meant you get to use the secret decoder. I really enjoyed playing this game, it was a lot of fun to pretend to be different things and there are so many cards that you could play this game over and over again and it would still be fresh. I also liked the fact the game had many different aspects to it, ie. Every other space has an action on it, you also have the spin it spaces and even the forfeits are fun to read. This is definitely a good family game. It gets your kids performing and gaining confidence as the game goes on. It also encourages communicating between kids and parents while playing. Alicia asked to play this at least three times when we first opened it. Since then she has asked to play it twice. I would absolutely recommend this game to other mums, it is incredibly easy to set up and you get real enjoyment seeing your child perform and they in turn get to see act silly as well. I think this is very good value for money, you get lots of pieces like the cards and timer and spinner etc Its also really fun and you always feel like somethings happening, some games can drag on but this one was action packed from start to finish.

Overall Winner What a Performance!

All the testing families loved this game - highly praised for its interactivity and for being fun! A great one to play all together. Junior Cluedo was a hit with two of our families and Natalie felt it would be a good game for children slightly older than 5. Rumble in the Jungle divided our testers, they thought it looked great, but that game play wasn't as easy as the other two games.

Silver Cross - Boost

mum & working chopice

A portable child booster seat made using Microban® antibacterial protection. It offers a convenient solution for mealtimes when you're away from home. It's fully adjustable, and four height settings mean that it can be used with babies over eighteen months on almost any chair. The whole product offers complete Microban® antibacterial protection.

4 stars

Came in quite a lot of packaging, bubble wrap and a large plastic drawstring bag which can also be used for storage of the seat There also seemed to be quite a lot of parts to this seat making it quite daunting in comparison to the other two seats tested. It came with instructions but after reading them twice Dad had to be called in to put it together, by far the most complicated of the three to put together. It fitted our chairs well but as with the Mamas and Papas booster this one also left a dent in our seats and again I would be concerned about using the seat for long periods of time on leather chairs. It wouldn't be practical to carry this booster about as it really is very bulky. But would be great for example to leave at granny's house which is exactly what we've done with ours, no more playing pass the baby at dinner. Again no problems fitting this to the chairs we used it seemed to fit well and was very sturdy. I think this one was probably Izabella’s favourite because it was the only one to have its own table. Really easy to get in and out of good secure straps once we'd finally figured out how to fit them! Easy to wipe clean with the added protection of Microban - the only chair tested that had this. This was the most expensive of the 3 at £40, it was very sturdy and very well built, but it wasn't particularly portable. But if you can afford it I would say that it would be very useful for granny's house as it doesn't take up a lot of space.

3 stars

This seat came out of the box and was pretty much ready to go. The instructions were ok to read although I had a little trouble understanding which loop went where for the straps. It fit our dining room chairs well and I loved the fact that it had different heights for different sized children. We took it to some friends and it was really easy to fit to other chairs. The tray is very easy to remove so getting your child out is simple that, however, is my main problem with the chair. There is only one slot for the tray. Flo is quite small so there was a gap between her and the tray so most of her food went on her lap! Flo was quite happy in the chair and food on her lap doesn't bother her! I'm sure older/ bigger children wouldn't have this problem. It's great to clean with hardly any nooks or crannies to hide fish fingers down and start to smell! Quite pricey, but if you had the money to spend and a slightly bigger child could be good value.

5 stars

The booster seat came in a pretty plastic drawstring bag, it was easy to get out. The instructions came in a booklet which had pictures and were very easy to use. This seat probably fit my chairs the best. It folded open and fit perfectly to my chair. As I don't drive whatever I take out with me has to fit it my pushchair - so I did not take this seat out, however I think it would fit most chairs. My daughter was most happy in this seat, she was extremly content. When I put her in she didn't try to get out and I felt like she was safe in it. It was very easy to get her in and out too. Once the seat was strapped to the chair I could sit her in and simply click the tray into place. When I wanted to get her out I just pressed the buttons either side and pulled the tray off and took her out. You can clean it by wiping it clean. She was also really happy and enjoyed the tray. I definitely think this is value for money.

Totseat

Totseat safely anchors a tot of between 8 and 30 months in almost any adult chair, like an instant highchair. It's the ideal, compact chair-harness to take with you on holiday, on days out or on visits to friends and relatives. Totseat is made of robust poly-cotton, so is fully washable, and comes in a range of funky fabric designs. It squashes into a tiny bag and is really easy to use - simply slip it over the chair back, adjust the length, clip it firmly and watch for the sighs of contentment from everyone.

5 stars

The Totseat was packaged beautifully but minimally in red paper it was nicely presented and with no bulky boxes to throw away. It also comes with its own little storage bag made from matching fabric to the Totseat which fits really neatly in the front of our nappy bag. It came with a small wipe clean instruction book with step by step instructions which were really easy to follow it also contained washing instructions and safety tips for the seat. It was really easy to put together only took a couple of minutes from unwrapping the packaging to having Oscar in the seat. I was a bit worried that the Totseat wouldn't fit my chairs as they have quite high backs but it fitted perfectly. Because it's so small it meant that it was very portable so its been out with us on at least five separate occasions. Izabella is especially keen on it as it means she can sit on a big chair and not in a high chair like her little brother. I've not come across a chair it doesn't fit yet. It even comes with and extra band so that it can fit onto backless chairs. It really does seem to accommodate most chairs. Both Izabella and Oscar have used to the chair with no complaints. The only downside I would say is that because they are both sat on the actual chair seat they can't really reach the table. It was a bit of a struggle to get Oscar in and out of the chair but that could just be because he's a bit of a wriggler and won't sit still even for a minute. It does help if you have an extra pair of hands, one to hold the baby and another to fasten the seat up. The seat is machine washable at 40 and you can tumble dry it, though I haven't tried this yet - but I have given it a wipe down with a damp cloth and the fabric seems to be hard wearing with no colour fade. I think that for £22 it's a good value product especially if you eat out a lot and like me find that most high chairs in restaurants tend to be a bit on the grubby side. I also liked the fact that it was so small and could easily fit in your handbag.

4 stars

Yes, yes, yes! What a great idea. The Totseat is basically a piece of material that fits over any chair to make a highchair. We have a similar one but this is better because it has proper clasps that are very secure and a cummerbund for chairs that don't have a solid back. It comes in its own bag that fits in either your handbag or under you pushchair so you've always got it with you. We've taken it to the library where its fitted over little chairs and out to the garden where it fits around our wooden garden chairs. Flo loves it and my only problem with it is that it doesn't boost the height of your child in an adult chair, just keeps them in securely. It's very easy to get your child in and out and if it needs washing, put it in the washing machine! Great value for money.

3 stars

The Totseat came in a matching material drawstring bag. It was very easy to get it out of the bag. The instructions were attached to the bag and were easy to follow, with pictures which were very helpful showing how it should be attached. It fit my chair just fine. It has a belt for adjustment so it was quite snug. I did take it out with me. I don't drive so it was ideal for me to have a portable highchair that could literally fold up in my bag which this one did. It did fit the chairs when I took it out, I just adjusted the strap and it was fine. My daughter was quite happy in the Totseat but she did seem a litte unsure at first. She is at an age when she is always trying to climb out of things and she did the same with the Totseat. It was quite easy to get my daughter in and out of it, because its just material I did have to keep one hand on her while strapping her in with the other. It wasn't very easy to wipe clean but you can put it in the wash. I really liked the fact it was to compact when in its bag making it possible to take it anywhere but for me the downside was when set up I didn't feel my daughter was as well strapped in as in the other seats I tested.

Mamas & Papas - Advance Booster Seat

A lightweight and practical booster seat that lets your toddler join you at the dinner table when they still require that little bit more height. Lightweight, ergonomically designed and easy to clean. Non-slip rubber spheres can be adjusted to eight different seat height positions. Attaches securely to most chairs with an adjustable strap. Adjustable safety harness holds your child securely in place. Folds compactly and includes a useful storage hook. Practical carry handle for transportation. Suitable from 18 months approx.

4stars

The seat came packaged in a cardboard box, easy to get out of the packaging no unnecessary plastic bags and it was already assembled with only the straps to feed though. It came with simple and uncomplicated instructions with diagrams fairly straightforward to put together and really easy to attach to our chair. It fitted our chairs really well and seemed quite sturdy my only concern was that because our chairs are leather it did leave indentations in the chair when removed these did eventually disappear but I would be concerned about long term use on our chairs. We took the seat for dinner at friends, which was fine as we were in the car so no problems with transporting it. It is however too big and bulky to take if you're going out for the day without the car. We didn't find any problems fitting this seat on any of the chairs we used it on. The seat is suitable for children of 18 months plus so only Izabella could try this. She loved the fact that the seat is height adjustable and that she could easily reach the table. This was the easiest seat I tested to get my child in and out of. It's wipe clean with a cloth no material covers to wash and the straps come off so they can be put in the washing machine if needed. I really liked the fact that this seat was height adjustable and really easy to use and clean. The downside is that it's just too big and bulky making it unsuitable to take out with us to eat or on holiday although it's great for visiting friends and family.

3 stars

My five year old got the seat out of the box and put it together from the instructions! But then came the problems - it didn't fit our chairs! The chair has a kind of space age design, which would probably appeal to Dads, but makes it very wide. It would only fit on a carver style chair so we couldn't risk taking it out and it not fitting anywhere. I think it's probably more suited to older children as it didn't have any arms to it and I felt unhappy about leaving Flo in the chair to go and get her food. It also didn't have a tray so the child needed to be able to reach over to the table. Saying that though, this is the chair that Flo was happiest in! She loved eating straight from the table and, once I'd worked out the mechanics, I realised that you could also easily change the height. There isn't much to it so it's also easy to clean. £29 is probably a good price to pay for it.

4 stars

The packaging was actually quite inviting and stylish and it was easy to get the seat out. The instructions were good with lots of pictures and were easy to follow and came in the form of a booklet. It fit my chair well, you just unfold it and strap it to the chair. I didn't take this seat out as I don't drive and I couldn't fit it in the pushchair. My daughter seemed happy in it and had a lot of fun playing with the spheres. It was very easy to get my daughter in and out. Once attached you just click the strap. This is a funky designed booster seat that is sturdy and fun. I think that it is value for money.

Overall Winner Silver Cross Boost & Totseat

This was an extremely close result with only one point between the runner up and joint winners. The reviewers all praised the Silver Cross Boost for its clean design and the fact that it had its own tray - they felt it was overall value for money and a good solution for sitting children up at the table to eat. The mums felt the Totseat was by far the most portable chair tested and that it was ideal for putting in your handbag or under your buggy out and about. It fitted all the chairs it was tested on. The testers loved the design of the Mamas and Papas Advance Booster, they felt it was good value for money, the only downside was for Claire who has trouble fitting it on her chairs.
