John Lewis Swim Nappy

A swim nappy enables you to take your baby swimming, whilst not having to worry about little accidents. It's just like a nappy, except it's water proof, has a towelling lining and a fun pattern. The John Lewis Swim Nappy is available in several fabrics - fun fishes, check, stripe and flowers. Available is sizes 3 months - 24 months.

3 stars

This swim nappy was made from nice colourful patterned fabric which appealed to my son. It was obvious how to use it and Benjamin who is starting to dress himself managed to pull the swim nappy up without any problems, The elastic fitted comfortably around his legs and looked secure. He really liked wearing it - he liked the different colours of the fabric and was happy both in and out of the water. My son didn't perform any number '2's' whilst wearing it, but if he had it looked like the nappy would have been secure enough to keep things in! We did however have a small incident as I was putting our clothes into the locker I turned around to find a puddle on the floor, so it hadn't stopped any wee's. It washed very well. I even put it on a hot wash (due to incident) and it came out fine. It dried quickly as well, so long as it was inside out. I have actually used John Lewis swim nappies in the past and have always found them good value for money - they are cheaper than the leading brands and do a reasonable job. I would recommend this swim nappy for older babies/toddler's who have more control of their bladder as it doesn't hold in any wee's.

4 stars

Gorgeous print, lovely bright colours and sweet frill all the way around. I would have been drawn to this in the shop. Very easy to put on Ursula, it has elasticated legs and waist. She seemed very happy in it. It was a good fit on Ursula and although she didn't have any 'incidents' in this particular nappy we have used John Lewis nappies before and I can vouch that they do the job they're designed to!! Washed well. It does take longer to dry than the other two designs as it has a towelling layer on the inside as opposed to a mesh that the other two have. I have always bought John Lewis nappies in the past and think they are great value for money and I would recommend them to other parents.

3 stars

I really liked the design of this swim nappy and it was very snug and secure, unfortunately I think it was a bit too snug and seemed too small for Finlay. He isn't 24 months yet, but the 18-24 months size really wasn't big enough. However we squeezed him into this nappy and it did the job keeping him for having an accident in the pool. This is a good value nappy and I'd recommend it to parents, it just might be worth testing the size before you buy.

Mother-ease Swim Nappy

Mother-easeĀ® Swim Nappies are made of a soft stretchy swimsuit material, which allows water to escape. Fastened with poppers, for speedy release. Inside there's a unique 'poo catcher' net that keeps accidents contained. Available in Jade, Seashell and new pattern Brazilian Rhythm.

2 stars

This swim nappy had a very colourful design. Benjamin commented on all of the different colours! I thought that with this nappy on he would definitely stand out in a crowd! It was ok to put on him, but didn't seem to fit as well as the other two tested and the poppers seemed like an added complication rather than positive addition. Benjamin seemed comfortable in it, but after 20 mins he said it was falling down. It didn't seem to stay on very well, even though it appeared to be fitted ok. I had to pull the nappy back up as it started to fall down whilst he was swimming. We had no incidents, but it clearly states on the packaging that it only holds in poo's! It washed well. In terms of value for money I would have expected it to be cheaper than the other brands because it didn't perform so well, but it was in fact the most expensive nappy we tested. I would prefer a nappy with easier adjustment, and more retention of incidents. I was really pleased with the minimalist packaging it came in though.

2 stars

The design reminded me of Superman! They're really shiny and bright red. I would never take these off the shelf to buy based solely on appearance. They're also quite boyish in colour. These were the easiest to put on as you put them on like a nappy. Although one might prefer a pull-up style like the John Lewis one with an older toddler. Ursula was happy in it initially but it became looser in the water. The fit was not brilliant, Ursula is in the middle of the weight band for this size but I'd say they were slightly on the big side. Although this nappy is extremely lightweight, compact and fast drying, a major downside for me, is it's hand wash only - not something any mother wants to be involved with after an 'incident'. I think that an 'incident' would be contained but with just the two, fine layers would be obvious and a little embarrassing. I prefer the other two nappies which look great, are machine washable, elasticated and have 3 layers, one of which is plastic which keeps the little one's modesty! I didn't feel this nappy offered such good value for money as the other two I tested.

4 stars

This was my favourite swim nappy that we tested. I liked the boyish colour and the design. Finlay was happy and comfortable wearing it and it fitted well. The poppers made it easy to get on and off. It did the job of holding in an incident in the pool and washed well. For us this was the best value nappy that we tested as it was the one that fitted Finlay best and that he was most happy swimming in.

Zoggs 'Zoggy' Swim Nappy/ 'Marengo' Bikini

The Zoggs Zoggy Swim Nappy can be worn on its own or under standard swimwear to prevent little accidents in the pool. This fabric swim nappy is re-usable for a healthier environment. Stylish and snug and prevents embarrassing accidents with its hidden protective layer.

The Zoggs Marengo Swim Nappy Bikini is a sweet set. The tethered cord around the waist ensures a secure fit. The swim nappy bikini is reusable making it environmentally friendly - simply rinse and dry ready to use again. Stylish and snug fitting with hidden protective layer and flower motif

5 stars

This swim nappy was quite plain, and looked more like traditional swimming trunks. My son liked the bright royal blue colour with the little seal on the front. It came with detailed instructions - far more than necessary! Also included the rest of the Zoggs range. The swim nappy was very easy to put on,drawstring worked well. Benjamin seemed really happy in it. I noticed that when we took them off, there was water inside which gushed out, showing that it holds any spills in well. It washed well. Compared to previous swim nappies I've used this one was very good and reasonable priced. I'd definitely recommend this swim nappy to other parents as it has the added feature of successfully holding wee in.

4 stars

I loved the design; I was so excited when I unpacked it. I've only ever bought nappies before not a full bikini but this has changed me now, it is adorable. I loved the halterneck design, the girlie colour, the sparkly fabric, the daisy on the bum. Just lovely. The only thing I would say is that I'd prefer the logo to be more discreet, I've never bought anything with a name across the chest before. The top was incredibly easy to put on Ursula, slipped over the head and then simple velcro round the back, there's also added protection of a loop to thread the back through. The bottoms were relatively easy to get on but not so easy to take off. The bottoms are drawstring which is really good as it ensures a snug fit; however, when the cord is wet it's quite difficult to untie. With a wriggly baby who's wet and getting cold, that was quite problematic. Both the top and bottom stayed in place when we were swimming. I had suspected that the top would ride up but it didn't. A great feature of this set was it comes packaged in a press-studded plastic pack which I used to keep the wet nappy in after our swim. It did hold in an accident and it washed really well! If I saw them in the shop or magazine, I might have thought that £7.99 was a little steep but now that I have handled them and used them, I do think that they are good value for money. I'd definitely recommend this set to other parents.

3 stars

I really liked the simple design and colour of this swim nappy, but unfortunately it wasn't really big enough for Finlay so wasn't that comfortable for him. I liked the drawstring feature and it did feel as though in the right size it would have been effective at holding in any incidents. Finlay wasn't very comfortable wearing this swim nappy, but as with the John Lewis nappy I think this was a size issue for us rather than a fault with the nappy. Again I would recommend it to other parents, but you'd need to check the size for your child.

Overall Winner Zoggs Swim Nappy/Bikini

Our reviewers all liked the simple smart Zoggs design and the bikini was a real hit with Tora and Ursula! The drawstring feature was liked and this nappy was successful at keeping in pool 'incidents' contained. The only downside was for Mum Lisa who found Zoggs a bit on the small side for her son. All reviewers praised the John Lewis nappies for being good value for money, effective and made from great fabric. The Mother-ease nappy was Lisa's favourite and she felt it fit Finlay brilliantly - however our other two testing mums found these nappies a little on the large side for their children, although they did think they would be effective at containing in pool 'incidents'.

Car Seats - suitable for age 9months+

Graco Logico M

At last, a safe and easy to use toddler car seat! The seatbelt threads easily through the back (so no scratched arms!) and locks off at the side. Seat fixing is extremely safe due to the easy to reach through seat belt guide and belt lock-off system. Easy to adjust harness and recline due to the handle at the front of the seat. Features include:

  • Adjustable seat support - 3 positions
  • 3 position adjustable harness
  • Fleeced lined harness protectors
  • 5 point security harness

3 stars

Seems solid and well made and was secure when put into the car. The fabric and the coverings looked quite cheap though unfortunately which let it down. Protective sides and a robust fastener, however I felt that there was not a lot of padding on the seat. I used the graphic illustrations only, which were clear on the most part, but did not show very well how to finish adjusting the position of the shoulder straps; however it was quite straight forward anyway. Had I become stuck I would have turned to the text. I had no difficulties in following the graphical instructions on how to fit the car seat. Benjamin was very happy to sit in this seat. I liked the recline feature. Although the car seat itself is quite bulky, even in our Nissan Micra this was not a problem, and Ben fitted into it with plenty of room to move his head, however when he fell asleep his head did roll around. Our previous car seat was a Maxi Cosi, and although the Graco does not have the seat belt tensioner, it seemed to be fitted just a securely, although I probably tightened the belt more than I would have normally just to make sure. Overall this car seat is good value for money and I would recommend it to other parents who are on a budget. The main area you miss out on is padding and luxurious fabric.

2 stars

The design was very standard, nothing missing but no special extras. Installation instructions were clear but adjusting the seatbelt was quite tricky and the instructions for doing so were unclear. Ursula seemed happy in it, but not as comfortable as in the other two as the padding was thin. The size looked fine. It just felt quite cheap: the fabric, thin padding, seat belts, recliner handle. I would have expected this seat to be under £100. We own a Maxi Cosi Priori XP which is a similar price but I believe better value for money. I think it is worth spending a bit more and getting an Isofix seat.

3 stars

This car seat has a smart, simple design but is less padded than the other two we tested. It was straightforward to fit into the car and the instructions were clear. The size was ok for Finlay. This seat seemed safe and secure once fitted into place. A good solid choice of seat, but without any outstanding special features.

Chicco Key1 Isofix

Equipped with the Isofix system, the most innovative, practical and safest system for fitting a child car seat into the car. With its three-point locking device, Key1 Isofix allows you to fit the child car seat into the car through a rigid base without using the car's safety belt. It ensures maximum protection in the event of an accident. Approved to ECE R44/04 Regulation for Group 1 (from 9 up to 18 kg), Key1 Isofix is very practical for the mother, and safe and comfortable for the child. Fitting Key1 Isofix is quick and easy:

  • 1) Fit the two Isofix connectors.
  • 2) Fasten the upper belt (Top Tether).
  • 3) Check that it is fitted correctly with the Double Check System. You do not need to use the safety belt of car.
2 stars

This seat looked good and mirrored a similar design to many other car seats found on the market. It was quite straight forward to install. Clear instructions on the seat itself which helped. Although it was very easy to install, it did move around a lot once installed (we don't have isofix so were using adult seat belt). I felt it was quite heavy. Ben was happy in it. The head support was a nice feature which kept his head still once asleep. Padded shoulder straps were padded and looked ok. It was easy to buckle up. Size wise the seat was fine. Unfortunately, using the seat belt to fit it didn't feel very secure at all. I prefer my own car seat to this one, basically because of the security issue - the seat moved around too much when attached with the seat belt, however if you are using Isofix then this may not be an issue. So for me it wasn't the best, but perhaps that was only because I couldn't use the Isofix feature.

4 stars

Nice design, again, well padded, secure Isofix fitted seat with headrest, and tilt. Nice fabrics. It came with clear, easy to understand instructions and was straight forward to fit and felt securely locked in place once fitted. Ursula was happy in it and it provided good support. Seat belt and recliner were easy to use. Only feature missing was clips on the side to put seatbelts on whilst putting child in and out of car. Good size and I imagine good too for when my child gets older. It felt secure and solid. The downside to this was that it is a bit heavy to haul between cars but if it's to be fitted and stay in one car then it's a great seat. Now that I have tried Isofix, I will always buy an Isofix now, they are so much more securely fitted. I liked the fabrics of this one. Of the 3 tested, this had the best seatbelt. Good, sound seat which represents value for money and I would recommend it to other parents.

3 stars

A smart, comfortable car seat with a nice design. I liked the Isofix fitting and found it really easy to use. The seat came with good clear instructions and was easy to fit into our car. The only problem came for me when trying to move it into another car which didn't have Isofix - then I found it quite hard to securely fit with the seat belts and it weighed quite a lot. Finlay was happy and comfortable in the seat though and overall I think this is a seat which offers a lot for the price.

Silver Cross Explorerfix

A fully adjustable reclining car seat that incorporates Group 1 ISOFIX technology. It can be used for children between the ages of approximately nine months and six years (9kg-25kg).

ISOFIX is a secure system built into your car that allows for a strong and safe connection between car and car seat. The Explorerfix combines ISOFIX with the latest car safety technology to provide the perfect balance of support, comfort and protection during car journeys. The headrest and harness move simultaneously with each other to keep your child correctly restrained as they grow, whilst the side impact protection is increased with the addition of head support. A three-position crotch strap provides extra comfort and safety.

4stars

Looked quite plush and well made. It was a grey/black colour. There was a lot of padding and it looked very comfortable. I liked the way the head support moved up and down, which I thought was a good feature, especially as your child grows. I also liked the fact that if they fell asleep it supported their heads well and kept their heads from rolling about whilst in the car. I thought that the instructions were very clear. The manual contained detailed images of how to install it and alter the different features. Very easy to fit. We don't have isofix, so had to install it using the seat belts. I liked the fact that the seat was slightly raised and you could see underneath very easily as where to put the belt and how to attach it. This is something I have not seen on any other car seat before, but it made it much easier to install. Benjamin was very happy in this seat and he looked very comfortable. The recline feature was good. I loved the fact that the head support moves up as they grow. The belt covers were also very nice, they had a rubber/ fabric fitting around the neck for extra comfort. The size was great, Ben is quite tall and on his car seat at home his head is just at the top, so the adjustable head rest was excellent. In terms of value for money this car seat is more expensive than the others that we tried, however you do get two extra years out of it which is nice, so in that respect it is good value and I would recommend it.

4 stars

Well designed, really padded, securely fitted seat with adjustable headrest, 3-position crotch strap and easy recliner features. It came with good, easy to understand pictoral fitting instructions and was very easy to fit - took me less than five minutes. Ursula loved this seat, she slept easily in it and unlike our carseat, the headrest provided great support. The headrest is fantastic and recliner feature very easy to use with one hand from the front of the car. The size of the chair was perfect and it looked safe and secure - very well padded and I was happy with isofix setup - quick and securely fitted to car, giving me confidence of child safety. I've not previously bought Isofix but this feature now will be a necessity on future purchases. Head support superior to anything previously seen and recliner feature very easy to use. The drawback to this seat is that we could not get the harness tensioner to run smoothly without first pulling the belts from under the seat rather than just by pulling the tensioning strap. The harness was always secured but the work around process fiddly and not ideal. Several telephone conversations were had with the manufacturer to try to resolve this but nothing was achieved in the timescale of the test. My advice would be to try this in the shop, it may be just the seat we had as this is otherwise the perfect car seat and would have scored full marks. Very good value for money, especially as when the child is older, the harness can be removed and the car seatbelt can be used. I have already recommended this seat to other parents!

4 stars

As the most expensive car seat we tested I had high hopes for this seat and it did not disappoint. Well padded, with nice fabric this seat fitted the car really well and was safe and secure. This Isofix fitting was quite simple to fit into the car and I liked this feature. Finlay seemed most comfortable in this seat and I think it would be the one that would last us longest in terms of size, so even though it is at the upper budget end I think you would get the longest use for your money.

Overall Winner Silver Cross Explorerfix

The Silver Cross car seat came out as the favourite choice of our reviewers who really liked the Isofix feature, smart design, padding and features of this seat. As the most expensive seat we tested the mums all felt it offered the best value for money as it it had longevity in terms of size. The Chicco Key1 Isofix was another popular choice with mums again liking the Isofix feature and recline, fabric and padding was praised too. The mums felt the Graco Logico M was a good solid car seat with a good price tag but that it lacked some of the comfort of the other two tested and missed out on having the Isofix feature, however they felt that was reflected in the much lower price tag of this seat and that it would be a good budget choice for parents who didn't want to spend so much.
