Wheelybugs

Wheelybugs go backwards, forwards, sideways, round and round... they can be ridden, pushed, pulled, kissed and cuddled! These ride on bugs, great for both boys and girls, almost have a magical mind of their own. Wheelybugs are designed to offer hours of robust fun and help to promote self-confidence, spatial awareness and gross motor skills.

5 stars

The packaging was non branded, it was adequately wrapped with not too much plastic and the bubble wrap there was, was reusable. The wheelybug arrived fully assembled – it has no visible parts and is obviously robust. It is attractive and easy to use; it is rounded and low, with a big handle to hold on to. It felt safe to leave my niece aged 9 months to explore it on her own. She loved the wobbly feelers and pushed it up and down from her seat. Very tactile and attractive toy that parents wouldn't mind lying around. Stylish and cool. My daughter loved it especially when we took it outside to test on the slope (dad managed to fit himself and her on and went for a ride down hill, this would probably be better on the larger size toys, but this smaller one took both their weights easily). My 16 yr old son then took up the challenge and 'skateboarded' on it. It stood up to this robust, all round testing and looked absolutely fine afterwards. Other than the wheels or the seams, I can't see how this toy could be damaged. I think this toy is value for money and could be used up to age 6, it is so well made and stands up to wear so well, I would buy it as a special present like a first birthday. It is stylish, attractive and easy on the eye, definitely this parent's choice. Suitable from babies to children of 5 or 6 and has more longevity than the quickly outgrown and limited attraction of a 'character' toy. If my daughter hadn't been so taken up with Thomas she would have been very happy with this, she has been drawn to them at friends houses in the past. It is very much an indoor toy and although it is robust enough for a trip outside I wouldn't leave it in wet weather. I would recommend this as a good choice for a younger child, it is a lovely toy although it is not a traditional ride-on/push along, they are adorable.

5 stars

This item had minimal packaging (eco-friendly) - cardboard box with bubble wrap around the ladybug, but as it was a big box they were keen to open it, whatever it was and when they saw the bright colours of the Ladybug they were very excited as my daughter has wanted to try one out for a long time. No assembly required but had a covering letter which advised how to use it and what is was made of. The Ladybug was very easy to use and works brilliantly on carpets and tiled floors. The best feature is the multi-directional castors which make it very easy to manoeuvre indoors where there are many obstacles. My girls think this is fantastic and cannot seem to get enough of riding it. It is definitely one of the best toys we have ever had. My 4 year old loves to ride on it or push her little sister around on it. It is suitable for both of my girls - the 4 year old just whizzes around on it constantly and says it is like being on a roller coaster. Even though the large size is recommended for 2.5-5 yrs my 15 month old is easily able to sit on it and push herself around. There is a smaller size available for 1-3 yr old but I think that if your child is over 18 months it is better to buy the bigger one if you want it to last longer. My children cannot get enough of the Wheelybug. They think it is absolutely brilliant and ride on it as much as possible. It is better for indoor play as it works best on level surfaces. I have only used indoors as I wanted to keep the castors clean for indoor use. Would definitely recommend this toy to other Mums as well as grandparents and godparents who want to buy a special gift for their children. It is visually appealing, well-made, durable, versatile and provided hours of fun. Even though it is quite expensive, it is well worth the money - if you compare the cost of all the poor quality toys you may have bought that are hardly even played with to the amount of use that you would potentially get out of this one.

2 stars

The toy arrived in a brown cardboard box with only the Hippy Chick logo on the outside. My son was not overly keen to get it open. It did not require any sort of assemble but had no instructions on how to use. That said it is fairly self explanatory! It looked surprisingly easy to use but turned out not to be particularly easy for my son or his friends to use. They could not get on and off it alone, none of them wanted to spend any time sitting on it and they didn’t look overly comfortable on it either. Sebastian only really enjoyed playing with the spring antennae on the lady bird and not actually riding it. I thought it would be good due to it being very low off the ground, but none of the children were able to use it very well and really didn't enjoy being on it so never got the opportunity to fully test ride it! I think it is a well made, lovely looking toy with great manoeuvrability and would be a product you would think about buying so am glad I had the opportunity to test ride it as four children aged 14 months showed no interest in it. I would therefore not recommend to other mums for that age group, but would say in my opinion older children who could use it properly would like it more. Given the overall quality of the product, the price is fair.

Thomas Sit 'n' Ride

For the younger child it's a walker, then it's a sit and ride toy for toddlers. Open Thomas' cab to reveal the secret storage compartment. Press the horn for a 'beep, beep' then off you go on another adventure! For indoor or outdoor use. Suitable for children 1-3 years.

4 stars

The packaging was bright; the box showed exactly what you are getting. Safety information was clear, on box and again on enclosed leaflet. To assemble the train, the toy needed to have the steering wheel put on, and the handle at the back fixed in. This was easy and there were instructions. The toy is a really good 'one size fits all' my daughter (2) was able to get on and off herself and made herself busy putting things in the space under the seat flap. It was low enough to feel safe for smaller children; the push along handle on the back is sturdy and well balanced, just right for babies pulling themselves up. This was Laurie's favourite. She loved this so much she wanted to take it everywhere, even to bed! She already has a similar toy, so it wasn't a novelty but she loves this one. I'm not keen on the Thomas characters, the stories are too moralistic for me, but my daughter is drawn to these characters despite not having seen them on TV, or having heard the stories. She is very attracted to this toy and it hasn't left her side this month. This item is plastic and has an environmental impact – however if its not going to end up in a landfill because it's a good and robust product then that impact is negated. This is a well made product, it could be left outside, is lightweight but still sturdy and safe and I can see it going through the hands of numerous children – this is an example of when plastic is useful.

4 stars

The box was appealing and showed exactly what it contained with clear pictures and bold colours. My 15 month old was eager to open it and has decided it is definitely hers. Instructions were clear and it was easy to put together - only 3 simple steps to follow. Sophie found it easy to steer and push along with her feet. She also enjoys just pushing it around the house and filling up the seat with small toys. Sophie has enjoyed playing with it a lot. Although it is a Thomas The Tank Engine theme and not very girly. she has enjoyed it very much and I would recommend it for either girls or boys. It is just the right type of toy for a child who is learning to walk as a walker and then as a ride-on toy as they get bigger. We have had it for nearly 3 weeks and Sophie is still playing with it regularly. It has been popular with other children who have come to play too. I think it could be used for indoor and outdoor play but I have kept it indoors due to all the wet weather. It seems robust though and I think will last well. I would recommend this toy to other Mums. It would also make a great gift item. It is good value for money. it is similar in price to other items of this type that are made of plastic.

4 stars

The Thomas sit'n'Ride arrived boxed well with bright and colourful pictures. My son was eager to get into the box as recognised the Thomas branding. It came with instructions but was self explanatory and easy to assemble. Sebastian was not able to get on and off it by himself or ride alone, so not particularly easy to use. (These finding were also true with other children the same age). He liked playing with it, not necessarily in the right capacity i.e riding on but enjoyed pushing it along, using the seat compartment to hide other toys as well as using the horn etc. Is suitable for his age, but not to actually use as a ride on toy unassisted, I would have thought an 18 month+ age guide to be more appropriate. That said, there is still some enjoyment to be had with it at his age. He has played with it more than once and likes it. Of the three, this toy was the one which excited the most interest This may be largely due to the branding though as he likes Thomas!

Radio Flyer Little Red Roadster

This shiny all steel bodied Radio Flyer Little Red Roadster is fitted with a real working steering wheel and honking horn. The comfortable seat is non-slip and the wheels are hard wearing steel with real rubber tyres. All this and a body low enough for them to scoot along using their feet to help toddlers gain confidence with their co-ordination and balancing skills. Suitable for children 1-4 years old.

2 stars

Very bright packaging. More complicated to put together than the others, but the instructions were easy to follow and once we had located the tools we had it working in about 15 mins. The product is attractive and obviously built to last. It is a good height but probably a bit big for anyone younger than my 2 yr old daughter. Laurie might have enjoyed using this more in the summer when we could use it outside. I was reluctant to take it to the park with us at the moment because it was so heavy and I couldn't have carried it far. The use of this car is limited indoors (unless you have a big floor space or long corridors). I would be worried about leaving it out in the rain but it should stand up to weather, I just wouldn't want to risk such an expensive toy. I think the other products in the Radio Flyer range like the bikes and trailers are better products, this feels as if it is too big and heavy for small children but bigger ones would prefer pedals or more excitement. My daughter hasn't particularly chosen this toy to play on but the boy next door loved it, but at 8 he lost interest after a while and didn't want to be seen out on it. I would probably recommend a ride on toy with wider appeal. Although it is expensive, I can see that it is a quality product and will last for generations, but I would buy another more useful product from this companies range. At this price you can get a bit more for your money and it is only a push along car.

The box looked very appealing before it was open and showed exactly what it contained. My girls were keen to get it open and assembled. It came with clear instructions but was a bit tricky to assemble and took a while. This can be expected though as it is a metal car with proper wheels and a lot of screws and bolts. It was not that easy to use as quite hard for children to turn indoors and fairly heavy to manoeuvre, but works well on a long straight passage. My children enjoyed playing with it but not as much as the other two items especially the Wheely bug. It was suitable for both children although I think my younger daughter enjoyed it more as we pushed her around while she sat on it. The girls played with it quite a lot but not as much as the other two items. I think this is suited to indoor and outdoor play but you need a long straight space to ride it on like a passage or driveway, as it is a bit difficult to steer. We have only used it indoors though. I don't think I would recommend it over the Wheelybug, if I was recommending a ride-on toy. It looks fantastic but is not as manoeuvrable as the other two items. I thought it was quite expensive but the price is in line with other toys of this type, so not unreasonable.

3 stars

The toy was packaged well with colourful pictures on the outside. My son was keen to see what was inside. It came with clear instructions on how to put together though did require some reasonably lengthy assembly. Sebastian liked sitting on it but wasn't able to make it move unassisted. He did not show a huge amount of interest in it. I would say the age for use would need to be 18 months plus as a minimum. None of the children were able to get on and off it themselves or ride alone. They were also unable to use the horn function. I think older children would love this ride-on, it looks great for indoor and outdoor play and if you could get it to move around it would be lots of fun. It is very well made and am sure would be extremely durable but is expensive and I would personally never spend that sort of money on a ride on toy especially not for Sebastian's age group.

Overall Winner Wheelybugs & Thomas Sit'n'Ride

We had a draw this month with two products being ranked equally by the testing families. It is an interesting result as the two ride-on's are very different and the families and children really loved them both! The Wheelybug was felt to be aesthetically pleasing to the mums and the children liked the animal theme - easy to use and although slightly higher priced all the reviewers felt Wheelybugs offered great value for money as a 'quality' product. Thomas was an extremely popular choice with the children; the mums also liked the Sit 'n' Ride and felt it was very easy to use especially for younger testers, again good value for money. The testers felt the Radio Flyer Little Red Roadster looked fantastic - stylish and high quality but that it would be better suited to older children and outdoor use.

5 stars

The packaging is clear and informative, although it is plastic the recycling symbols are present and the product is very concentrated so the pack is smaller. Plastic is also safe to leave by the bath. This is my favourite, while none of these 3 products have harsh ingredients and lauryl sulphate in particular, without it there are never going to be lots and lots of bubbles, certainly not the bubble baths of my childhood up to the rim courtesy of 'matey'. (laurel sulphate is the last thing I would want to put in my child's bath – it is harsh, easily absorbed into the bloodstream and associated with some frightening health conditions). This is a very good product, it produced a good bath with enough bubbles for me to feel nostalgic and leaves my daughter clean and smelling gorgeous. The fragrance is lovely, clean and fresh but not too strong. It is concentrated and works, a little goes a long way and we have lots left at the end of the month. I have previously bought a shampoo from Green People which lasted for 5 months! It can be used as a bath product, shower gel and put onto a wash cloth and used like a liquid wash or soap. It dealt with any test my toddler threw at it this month; it removed biro and indelible marker, paint, food, a thick coat of vaseline, and glue. I would recommend it and will continue to buy it. It is a brilliant product that I wouldn't be without. In terms for value for money it competes well because the product is concentrated and must be compared to buying over nearly a litre of bubble bath. I would recommend parents to try it.

5 stars

I liked the packaging of this bubble bath - bright colours and looks appealing to children and had clear information showing ingredients and directions for use. It made lots of bubbles and was a real hit in the bath. It smells lovely - of lavender, mainly which I have found is always a favourite with my girls. My children loved it and are still enjoying using this product. Because this product is concentrated you do not have to use much at all. As it says on the bottle a little goes a long way and it does! It left their skin clean and did not irritate at all. Definitely value for money as you get twice as much in this tube compared to the other two products for only 24 p more than the cheapest of the 3 items. I would definitely buy it again when this one is finished and would recommend it to other Mums. I have already tried the Green People Shampoo and would recommend it too.

3 stars

The packaging was ok and easy to use but given the price you're paying for the product, I would have expected much better/more up market packaging. Is no more appealing than your everyday bath products. It made loads of bubbles - almost too many! Were difficult to get rid off after the bath water disappeared. It smelt lovely and Sebastian really enjoyed the bubbles it made. I used the required amount full as per the instructions and produced ample bubbles it left skin clean with no irritations. You get more product for your money so it is good value for money. It wasn't my favourite product but I would recommend it to other mums.

Neal's Yard Rememdies Baby Bath - Shampoo

Organic soothing infusions of chamomile and lavender flowers cleanse the skin in this gentle gel to add to the bath or use as a shampoo. Ingredients - Water, lauryl glucoside, cocamidopropyl betaine, glycerin, propolis extract, hydrolysed oat protein, levulinic acid, chamomile extract, lavender extract, lavender oil, alcohol denat.

3 stars

It was packaged in the trademark Neals Yard blue glass bottle. Not much information on the product but the information is available in shops or the web page. Didn't produce an enormous amount of bubbles but at this price I was reluctant to pour much in - it was a concentrated product but with only 100ml it was never going to go far. It smelt lovely but I found it was a bit too gentle a product to do the job of cleaning my toddler. I feel it is very much a newborn product and they don't get dirty! I liked the fact that again it didn't contain any harsh product and no Laurel Sulphates. I would be confident it is gentle and kind to irritable skin but less confident about removing felt pen. It is expensive and although I would buy it as a present, I think the Green People product offers better value for money and better cleaning power.

4 stars

This bubble bath was well packaged when it arrived - a blue glass bottle enclosed in a blue re-cyclable cardboard box. The glass bottle looked great although I was worried about dropping it on the bathroom floor. It made quite a lot of bubbles but we needed to use quite a bit. It smells wonderful - of lavender and chamomile. My children loved it, especially the smell. I needed to use about 2 capfuls per bath to get enough bubbles. The bottle just said add required amount so it is up to you how much you use. It left skin clean and did not irritate at all. It is the cheapest of the 3 but the first item had twice as much volume. I still think it is value for money as generally I have found Neal's yard items to be of a high standard and made with quality ingredients. My girls enjoy using bubble bath so this one would not be used everyday as it is more expensive. I'd buy it again and would recommend it to other Mums to buy, even though it is a bit pricey.

4 stars

The packaging was really nice. Simple but looked sophisticated and easy to open etc. It made lots of bubbles and had a really lovely smell, my favourite of the three. Sebastian liked it and enjoyed the bubbles it made. I used the required amount full as per the instructions and produced ample bubbles. It Left skin clean and smelling nice with no irritations. Also used for his hair which was left clean and smelling nice. It is a lovely product if you were going to splash out on a more up market bubble bath range. Id buy it possibly as a treat but still an expensive bathing option for the normal everyday working mum. Would recommend however.

Maclaren Beginning range - Calming bath milk

Made with 70% certified organic ingredients. A pure blend of organic oils infused with 100% pure essential oils to gently cleanse and soothe baby at bath time. The calming aroma of Lavender soothes baby into a restful state, while Geranium and Mandarin instil comfort and serenity.

This was a totally new product to me - I've never seen it in shops. The packaging was bizarre – I wasn't sure if the bottle was supposed to come out of the protective cardboard tube, but there was a leaflet inside so I assumed it should do but never actually managed to remove it. The cardboard tube acted as a wrapper and absorbed the oil - quite unattractive to have out on display but making the oily bottle safer to hold and avoiding dropping the glass bottle . The product itself smelt lovely but it was a bath oil rather than a bubble bath and had no bubbles. As such it was pleasant, Laurie liked the novelty, especially the oh your all slippery we are going to drop you one. But I would fear dropping a new baby if they were oily. It certainly couldn't cope with a grubby toddler. On a wash cloth it works well and may be of use with severe exema. I only tested this on children once (if their hair gets wet it looks horrible when it dries). But I did use it myself, and as such was a lovely luxurious bath oil. The fragrance was soothing and relaxing but at the price I wouldn't use it very often. I wouldn't recommend this product for children but re branded and packaged for mothers to be and new mums it would be lovely present, though very expensive.

3 stars

The packaging was innovative but took a while for me to work out how to open it. The label I thought was a bit boring and does not jump out at you. The writing on the label did not stand out much - I thought it should be bolder and easier to read The glass bottle it came in is designed not to shatter, which I thought was a good idea. It did not really make any bubbles but as it is bath milk I don't think it was meant to. It smells lovely and fresh - geranium, lavender and Mandarin. My children liked it but I think it more suitable for babies especially newborns as it is a calming bath milk rather than a bubble bath. I did need to use more than the recommended capful for a big bath but maybe the capful is meant for a small baby bath. It left skin clean and did not irritate at all. I think it was quite expensive compared to the other 2 items. I'd say it is better suited to Mums with new babies rather than those with older children who love bubble baths. I was interested to see that Maclarens Beginnings had a whole range of products which I had not heard of.

1 stars

The packaging was really nice. Though wasn't very clear how to get into it! Once you had ripped the full label off, you needed to get it out of a cardboard tube. Was then in a nice glass bottle. It made no bubbles whatsoever – it was more oily based. It did have a nice smell to it, but would more akin to an adult aromatherapy massage oil than a baby product. Sebastian didn't really like it as no bubbles and made the water merky so you couldn't see bottom of bath or find some toys etc. I used the required cap full as per the instructions. It left skin clean with no irritations. I didn't think it was value for money, I reckon the product would only last about 10 days tops so at practically a pound a bath it is very expensive.

Overall Winner Green People Childrens Bath & Shower Gel - Lavender

Green People came out tops this month in our children's bath products test. The mums all thought it offered great performance at an affordable price. It is highly concentrated so a little goes a long way! Neal's Yard was a close runner up - again the mums and their children loved the fragrance and thought the packaging/bottle were stylish and it would be a great treat to have in the bathroom! The testers praised the Maclaren Beginnings calming bath milk for its lovely scent, but thought it was much more suited to newborn babies than toddlers - and would be a lovely special present for new mums.
