5 stars

I liked the design and the material of this carrier the most. The instructions were clear - although I think all baby carrier instructions can be a little confusing to start with! It was the easiest of all the carriers to put on and I could manage to get Rhiannon in and out on my own - much easier than the other two carriers. It felt secure for Rhiannon and I think it would have felt secure for a newborn too. This was the most comfortable to use and the design of it offered extra back support for the person using it. Rhiannon was happy and comfortable in this carrier. Both myself and my partner could use it and the size could be adjusted easily. Although this carrier is at the top of the price range I do think it offers value for money.

5 stars

I loved the design of the BabyBjorn. It was very simple and easy to use - I could easily get Ethan in and out on my own without help from another person. I felt Ethan was very secure, happy and comfortable in it. It supports your back really well and is nicely padded. This is a very comfortable carrier and I was happy to keep it on. Both myself and my partner could use it as it is easy to adjust for different height wearers, and to accommodate a growing baby. The straps are easily adjustable to suit the individual requirements. Even though it is pricey, overall it is brilliant and could be used for further children.

5 stars

This carrier was my favourite! It was really self-explanatory to use with a simple and easy to understand design. My partner liked the design and colour too. It was very comfortable, easy to adjust and Mae was very secure and happy in it.

Jeep 3 Way Carrier from The Hauck Group

The Jeep 3-Way-Carrier from the Hauck Group is styled in such a way that dad will enjoy using this carrier as much as mum for it copes with the great outdoors with the greatest of ease. The fresh, modern easily washable fabrics have a luxury feel and appearance which make this carrier a real winner for both short and long journeys.

The Jeep 3-Way-Carrier offers fantastic versatility. It can be used as a back carrier or a front carrier and when used as a front carrier, baby can face either inward or outward. This carrier is individually adjustable and even the seat width is adjustable to suit your baby giving ultimate support. The 3-Way-Carrier is upholstered helping it to fit perfectly to your body shape and allowing you to carry baby comfortably and the removable and washable bib is a great feature which keeps the carrier looking in tip top condition. Suitable for babies weighing between 3.5kg to 12kg.

3 stars

I liked the colour of this carrier and the material was easy to wipe clean. The instructions were clear but I struggled the most with this carrier when it came to putting Rhiannon in it on my own. It was possible but much easier with help. Rhiannon didn't feel as secure as with the other carriers and I felt I needed to hold her. The shoulder straps were not very comfortable and felt like they were sliding off. Rhiannon was the most restless when using this carrier. Both myself and my partner could us the carrier, but the size was quite small - anyone above a size 16 would have dfficulty using it. Although this carrier is a good price, it didn't offer as much value for money for me as the other two - it wasn't as comfortable and Rhiannon didn't feel as secure.

3 stars

I liked the design of this carrier, as it looked simple, but comfy. The instructions were clear. In the beginning I found it difficult to put on without any help, but after using it for a while it became easier to wear. Putting Ethan in was easy; the only problem was getting the carrier on. Ethan felt secure and supported and did not flop down. I didn't find it comfortable in the front position. It was more comfortable when I was using it when carrying my baby on the back. When I wore it with my baby in the front it dug into my chest. Ethan was happy and content in it. Both myself and my partner could use it and it was easy to adjust the size. I don't think it was great value for money though as I have seen more comfortable and easier to put on baby carriers on the market at a better price.

3 stars

Again I liked the design of this carrier, it looks smart and stylish the main thing I didn't like was the size. I could wear it ok, but my partner is a big man and he couldn't wear it comfortably at all. Mae seemed happy in it and I found it fairly comfortable to use. It was easy to put on and use and but because only I could wear it and not my partner for us as a family it didn't represent value for money. I'd recommend to other parents that when they are thinking of buying a carrier that they try and go into a shop and try different types on before purchasing, because I didn't know they varied so much in size.

Baby Trekker Carrier

A versatile and extremely comfortable baby carrier with 5 wearing positions: Backpack, Inward facing, Outward facing, Nursing, Outward facing on back. Wide padded shoulder straps and wide padded waistband creates a secure and comfortable fit. Padding throughout all the edges of the carrier to make a soft cushion for baby's head, neck, arms and legs.Suitable for babies 8-40lbs / 4-18kg. Convenient front pocket for keys, nappies or a blanket. Includes a piece of matching material with a velcro fastener to protect the front of the carrier from drool etc.

4 stars

Initially I liked the design of this carrier the least out of the three carriers. It was crucial you read the instructions otherwise it did look like a giant octopus!!! The instructions were good and easy to follow - it also contained a DVD of instructions but there was no need for us to use this. The colour was ok but a bit bland. The material of this was not easy to just wipe clean. I found the carrier a little awkward to put on by myself but I could do it although it was much easier with the help of someone else. It did feel secure, but I think it might not have felt quite so secure for a newborn baby. This carrier was the most comfortable to use with Rhiannon facing forwards rather than towards me. It was a very good design for adjusting the size to the required fit. This was the mid priced carrier and may seem expensive when you are intially looking at it alongside all the baby equipment you need to purchase for a newborn, but I think this carrier offers good value for money because it can be used for longer as your baby grows.

3 stars

I wasn't too sure about the design of the Baby Trekker at first - it looked like some sort of Octopus with bits of material everywhere. The instructions tried to be clear, but it was difficult to understand, as there were so many straps everywhere. It came with a dvd of instructions which did make it easier to understand how to put the carrier on. With practice it got easier. I could just about manage to get Ethan in on my own in the front position, the back position was tricky on my own. Once inside Ethan felt secure and content. The carrier was sort of comfortable and sort of not! - It was well padded, but felt a bit too bulky. It was easy to adjust. In my opinion this carrier would be great for people who would not be taking the baby in and out of the carrier, as it is really comfortable for long journeys.

3 stars

I thought this carrier was going to be really hard to use when I first saw it - there were so many different bits of material it looked like a spider! However, once I looked through the instructions properly it started to make sense. I didn't find it easy to put Mae in it on my own though and it felt quite bulky when I got it on as it is very padded. I didn't find the straps uncomfortable to wear though, and once in Mae seemed happy to be carried in it.

Overall Winner BABYBJÖRN® Baby Carrier Active

Our testers really loved the BABYBJORN® carrier, with it scoring full marks from each Mum! Praised for the easy of use and how happy their babies were in it this product is an all round winner. Both the Baby Trekker and Jeep 3 Way scored well too - the Mums found the Baby Trekker comfortable for long journeys but the most complicated to use initially. The Jeep carrier was thought stylish and easy to use but it was let down by the size issues.

3 Mums have tested three very different stroller sun shades for us this month. Ranging from a traditional parasol to an all over buggy shade cover they have looked at ease of use, comfort, effectiveness and value for money.

Hauck Fun For Kids Parasol

The Hauck Fun For Kids Parasol costs just £9.99 and is available in an array of bright colours including Red, Yellow, Blue, Black and Uni Navy. This parasol can be used with most types of buggy and is terrific for protecting baby from the summer sun. The parasol's stylish design and the fact it is made from easy wipe clean material, keeps it looking in tip top condition and offers fantastic value for money.

3 stars

This parasol looked robust and was easy to tuck away when not in use. This actually took the longest of the 3 to fit as the fitting mechanism did not swivel so had to be fitted in exactly the right place on the pushchair according to where the sun is. Has a flexible arm which means it can be moved slightly but was not as adjustable as parasols that I have used in the past. When correctly positioned, yes it provided a lot of shade. This was at the cost of Edward being able to see out and I had to keep altering the position of it according to where the sun was which was a nuisance and was frustrating having to stop every time we changed direction. Edward thought it was a great toy for him to grab hold of and wiggle! Not very happy as to provide enough shade had to be angled across him so that he couldn't see out. Overall this was a good product though - easy to use, good value and provided good shade.

3 stars

In this day and age I think parasols are a little old fashioned in view of all the new technologies and ideas available. It looked ok and was made from an opaque material also comes in various bright colours so could be fun though mine was navy. Quite straight forward to attach plus there were straightforward instructions. Didn't attach to my buggy as the bars are thick and kept loosening. Fitted my little lightweight buggy but doesn't offer very good coverage as the parasol is small and you have to move it regulary. My children loved it as they could move it and chew on it, increasing my stress levels, and providing even less coverage for them. On the positive side it's easy to store either under buggy or in your bag and if it rains you can use it as a brolly. It's good value for money and it does protect from sun as long as you keep adjusting it.

2 stars

This was a typical parasol design, the umbrella material was strong and the handle was good quality with sturdy fixings. It didn't come with any instructions, but it was very straightforward. The parasol attached to the frame of my pushchair - an Emmaljunga Duo Combi, though it would not have fit to the frame of my other pushchair - a Stokke Xplory. Edward was ok with this shade, as long as I kept repositioning it to keep the sun out of his eyes, that was the main downside that I did have to keep stopping and moving the parasol to make sure it was shading him. The parasol is a good price, compact and easily transportable for holidays etc - but you will have to keep repositioning it as you go along.

Shade-A-Babe

The Outlook® Shade-A-Babe incorporates a 50UPF+ optional use sunvisor and an INBUILT glare guard. The shade provides 70-99% UV protection, whilst still allowing good vision and ventilation for the infant. It also protects against insects and wind. The shade has been uniquely designed to fit most 3 & 4 wheel strollers and joggers. Easily fitted and stored, it is available in single & double models. The fabric has a 10yr warranty vs UV degradation.

5 stars

This product looked really good quality and well made, although the mesh material was rather stiff. It came with good instructions - both on the back on the packaging and a separate leaflet. It was really really easy to fit and of the three this was the best fit, could have been made for my pushchair! This provided the best shade and Edward was totally shaded from the sun. Unfortunately Edward hated it! He couldn't see out because of both the sun visor element and the black mesh in front of him. Despite the obvious benefits I too wasn't sure about this shade. I felt really self conscious using it as no one can see that you have a child in the push chair all they can see is the black netting. However for all the benefits it provides this is a good value product which works extremeley well.

1 stars

In theory this is a great idea, it looks great and fitted my buggy very well, downside it's made from stiff mesh with a fabric sun visor, Quite bulky to travel with and I had to undo straps and pull it up to get boys out, and remove completly to fold buggy. Instructions were missing from packet and it's very fiddly to fit lots of velcro straps to attach to buggy, can take a while to make them neat and out of view. Both boys liked to pull them apart when they where sitting in the back seat not ideal. I thought it offered full sun protection until closer inspection of packet, the mesh which is most of it only has UPF3 though eyes are protected by visor (UPF50+). Does not require any adjusting and can be used in two positions, half shade allows you to unzip a square of mesh at the front so baby can see out. Full shade offers complete coverage, which was where my issues arose. Felt really guilty as wasn't sure if it was blocking the boys view out as it's quite opaque, and I felt my son was isolated away from me. Don't think either boys`were that keen on it, initially they loved it as they where hidden away but this wears off, and Ryan kept trying to pull open the mesh. My main concern was lack of air circulating, One day after being in direct sunshine for only 15minutes I opened it up to check on him and he was bright red and bathed in sweat. I personally didn't think it's value for money as I didn't feel comfortable using it.

4 stars

This was a good design, though bulkier than the others. The material was strong and of good quality. It came with clear instructions and although it was big, it was very easy to attach to my pushchair and adjust to provide a good fit. I think this shade would fit any pushchair, it was large enough to go over my pram and the way the velcro fittings were designed it could easily be adjusted for a snug fit. Of the three shades tested this provided the best shelter from the sun. Once it was in place it provided total shade. It had zips on the front and a velcro fastening across the front for easy access to Edward. Edward was happiest in this one, it provided a cosy, shaded environment, and he nodded off quickly. Excellent value for money.

Rayshade

RayShade's soft, tightly-woven nylon/lycra meets the highest possible rating for sun protection. Tested and rated at 50+UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) Easily-Adjustable, RayShade Extends the Protective Shaded Area Under Every Stroller Canopy. Place over any canopied stroller, jogger or pram with the front curve of the hoop facing forward. As the angle of the sun changes, you can quickly adjust the RayShade forward or back to provide your child with the right amount of sun protection. A Hidden Bottle Pocket Holds Bottles and Cups Upright while larger pockets on both sides hold tissues, mobile phones etc.

3stars

The design was good and the material looked and felt good quality. When reading the packaging it seemed a really good idea and very user friendly. There were clear instructions were on the back of the packet about how to fit it and how to fold it away really small. I found the Rayshade very easy to fit, although it did take a bit of tweaking to get it to extend fully and then to retract again. It was a little bit too wide for my pushchair, so had to wrap the Velcro fittings around several times which made it look a bit messy. It shaded Edward's face and neck but arms were still exposed and it had to be fully extended to provide adequate shade which meant he couldn't really see out. This made Edward unhappy as he couldn't see out and look around him which is one of the main attractions of a walk! He kept grabbing the shade and trying to pull it off and because the material is very flexible this was easy for him to do and was easy to reach because it extended so far forward. I felt it didn't provide much more shade than the normal pushchair canopy and because of the problems described above was not really very effective. The description promised a lot but I felt that the actual product did not live up my expectations.

5 stars

This was my favourite shade of all three, It looked like a big soft flexible hood that snuggly fitted the stroller, the tightly woven fabric mean't it had a UPF of 50+. My friends and i all thought it looked very stylish. More importantly Ryan loved it. It didn't block his view, whilst sleeping could be lowered to minimise distractions and allowed the air to circulate freely. Easy to move up and down to maintain suncoverage ( In direct sun his shins and feet where not protected).Best of all the Rayshade rolls away in it's own pocket, which is great when travelling, Fits in my changing bag though doesn't need to be removed for storage as it folds up with the buggy's canopy. Has great instructions on how to roll away, attaching to buggy is straightforward, but when it's windy it does flap about abit, which meant fiddling with straps to secure it. Did not mention this in instructions. I would highly recommend this product and think it's great value for money.

1 stars

I did not like the look of this sun shade, nor the material really, it was like fine lycra and it felt flimsy and slippery. I didn't find it that easy to use as it didn't fit my buggy that well and the shade didn't cover the hood properly. It didn't shade Edward very well because the material was quite slippery and kept sliding out of place and I had to keep moving it back forward. Edward was least comfortable in this one as it didn't provide ample shade from the sun and kept slipping out of place. For me it wasn't value for money - but on a different pushchair perhaps it would have been a much better fit and then would have worked properly?

Overall Winner Shade-a-Babe

Overall the Shade-a-Babe scored the highest mark in the tests, however it was a very close contest with only one point between them and Rayshade. Opinion was divided between the Mums with all having their own definite favourite shade. The Shade-a-Babe was praised for ease of use and total shading ability, the Rayshade fitted some buggy models better than the others and the Parasol was thought a good value option.
