Tried and Tested!

We decided to begin the reviews with two areas which are in constant debate amongst parents - Re-usable nappies and ready-made baby food. The M&W Review panel this month is made up of 2 Mums and a Dad.

The testers have all been using disposable nappies exclusively for their children and we wanted to see if re-usable nappies really can offer an alternative in terms of performance and convenience. The tests were carried out over a two week period trying each nappy type for a minimum of two days, plus washing and drying time.

Kushies Ultra.

Kushies Ultras are made with 5 layers of cotton flannelette and 2 hidden layers of polyester/rayon soaker pads. They have a built-on waterproof layer, which removes the need for extra waterproof wraps/pants. Ultras are easy to use with a double strip of Aplix* fasteners ensuring ease of use and a snug fit around the legs. The waterproof fabric is specially formulated to withstand the rigours of washing whilst maintaining softness and suppleness.

4 stars

I really liked the design of Kushies, as they mirror disposables as closely as possible. There are fun designs on the pants for both boys and girls. Whilst they are bulkier than Cotton Bottoms, they are less bulky than Mother Ease. They had good absorbency, although Isabella's skin was wet when I changed her. Very easy to use.

4 stars

I thought Kushies were fantastic - my favourite by far! They were easy to use, with a very simple one piece design and easy to use velcro fastening. The performance was excellent for wee, poos took a bit more getting used to though - as the liner didn't always catch everything. However in terms of overall ease of use they were the best for us.

4 stars

Definitely our favourite - easy to use, with a simple one piece and liner design. They were very absorbent, didn't leak and were not too bulky. Oscar seemed very comfortable in them. The only slight downside was that they took a long time to dry.

Mother-ease One Size

A cotton terry nappy that fits from newborn to toilet training. The size simply adjusts with a popper system. Great fit with leak free comfort.

3 stars

I found these very very bulky indeed. Isabella looked uncomfortable and I had to choose her clothes carefully when she was wearing them. It noticeably affected her movement. The nappies were very wet when I changed her, and I did feel she needed a wash and dry when changing her. On the plus side the nappies were very easy to assemble and put on - quite similar to disposables.

3 stars

Mother-Ease I found a little bit more tricky to use as the popper-button fastenings weren't always easy to do up. I found it took me about twice the time to get Lettie sorted out at a nappy change compared to using a disposable. The performance of these nappies was excellent though - the absorbency level was good and they washed well.

2 stars

These nappies were very bulky - to the point where I couldn't actually do up Oscar's trousers! He also seemed uncomfortable moving about in them. The nappies did perform well though, we didn't have too many leaks and I imagine that if you used them for your baby from birth you would probably buy clothes that are specifically designed to fit over bulky brands of washable nappies.

Cotton Bottoms

Cotton Bottoms nappies look like disposables, but the nappy pads are 100% natural, breathable cotton, as kind on your baby's skin as they are on your pocket. They are easy to wash, and ultra-comfortable on your little one, and make it easier than ever to do your best for your baby and the environment.

3 stars

These nappies were the most complicated to use - there is quite a technique to folding them! On the plus side, the overpants were pretty and they were not as bulky as the other two types. I think if I had found them easier to use, I would have liked them more as their performance and absorbency was good.

3 stars

These nappies were ok to use, I liked the velcro fastening, but again I found nappy changes took a lot longer and there was a lot of technical folding to get used to! The performance was really good though and I liked the look and overall design of them.

2 stars

We found Cotton Bottoms fiddly to use, with lots of different elements and there were so many ways to fold them! Boy fold, girl fold, liquid poo fold! However the performance was good and I am sure the folding becomes second nature after you have been doing it for a while. Oscar seemed fairly happy in them, they didn't restrict his movement and were not too bulky.

Overall Winner Kushies Ultra

All of our testers liked the design and ease of use of Kushies the most. They felt it most closely mirrored a disposable nappy and therefore offered the same convenience, but with all of the environmental and cost benefits of a washable nappy.

All of the babies taking part in the test have previously been fed exclusively on home-made food. We wanted to see how ready-made meals would compare in terms of taste, appearance, portion size and consumption!

Ready Made Baby Meals

Annie & Isabella Beaty & Lettie Ben & Oscar

Truuuly Scrumptious

Truuuly Scrumptious are dedicated to creating frozen organic meals especially for babies & toddlers. The multi-award winning range certified by the Soil Association starts from the first stages of weaning up to around 3 years of age. It includes such delights as Carrot, Parsnip & Swede, Spaghetti Bolognese and Salmon & Broccoli Pie. Also including 'No Added Salt' Organic Chicken & Vegetable stock, ideal for parents making their own baby food or your own home cooking.

4 stars

Overall I really liked Truuuly Scrumptious - the food looked and smelled like real food with excellent, good sized pieces in it. However it had a mixed reaction from Isabella - she loved some meals, but wasn't so sure about others. The portion size was big, but if you defrosted in advance you could divide a portion. Slightly more expensive than other brands, but it is pure organic, wholesome food which you can identify! The only downside is it takes a long time for portions to cool down.

4 stars

I found the portions very large for Lettie, and therefore I was throwing away food at each meal as I was heating the food from frozen. However Lettie really liked the food and I thought it was well made, looked like good home-cooked food and because portions were big they would be very good value for someone with a baby with a big appetite!

3 stars

Normally Oscar will only eat food he can grab with his fingers and isn't keen on spoon feeding at all! The fact that he ate any of these meals showed us the quality of the food in terms of taste and consistency. Truuuly Scrumptious meals had good portion sizes when Oscar liked them, when he wasn't keen on the flavour we did feel we were throwing a lot of food away.

Babylicious

Babylicious is an award winning range of frozen food for babies created by mother and food scientist, Sally Preston. Unlike processed jars, they taste just like food mums make at home and contain absolutely no added salt, sugar, preservatives or fillers. Cubes of food are Snap-Frozen to lock in natural goodness so you can simply pop out the number of Babylicious cubes your baby needs and heat them.

3 stars

Isabella has only ever had homemade organic food. She has never had anything processed or packaged. I thought Babylicious was a lot more like the food I starting feeding her when she was first weaning, quite 'gloopy' and mushy looking. Having said that she did like it and I really liked the portion sizes and the fact that I was able to 'pop' out as many as I thought she could manage rather than having to cook a large amount at once. The food quality seemed good, but I did feel I needed to bulk up the meals by adding extra items to them, such as lentils or sweet potato. In my opinion this range is best for first stage weaning.

5 stars

Lettie really liked this food. The 'ice-cube' style pop out portion sizes were great and meant very little wastage as I could keep adding if Lettie was enjoying. I thought the packaging was very clear and I could see (down to the last pea!) what exactly was in the food. They were good value for money and my only complaint is I can't find them in my local Sainsburys!

4 stars

We thought this range offered the best value for money, as there was much less wastage than with the other two options. Oscar was keen on the Cheesy Pasta. I did think the meals were much more mushy than what I would normally feed him, and that they didn't offer much opportunity for 'self feeding'. As he is at the upper end of the age range for these products he might have enjoyed their older range Kiddylicious even more.

So Baby

So Baby produce an exclusive range of award winning organic baby food. Handmade, organic, natural, nutritious and delivered to your door. So Baby meals are suitable for babies 6 months through to 2 years. The company are proud to be a small family run business, with a passion for what they do - nothing is outsourced, and they only use the finest, local, organic ingredients. Menu includes - Moroccan Lamb with Cous Cous, Braised Beef & Barley Hotpot, Salmon & Vegetable Pie and Macaroni Cheese.

4 stars

Isabella liked the Chicken & Vegetable Casserole best and had a mixed reaction to the other menu options we tried. The consistency of So Baby was good - identifiable tastes and smells. Again I thought the portion sizes were big and you would have to be organised and defrost in advance in case your baby wasn't hungry enough for the whole meal. I did think meals were good value for money; you get pure wholesome food which you can identify! You also need to factor in that all the work is done for you. The main downside in my opinion for So Baby was it took a long time for portions to cool down if heated from frozen.

4 stars

I really liked the recipe choices and felt that I was giving Lettie food/tastes that I might not cook myself for her which I liked. The food looked, tasted and smelled good and Lettie really liked it, particularly the Butternut Squash Risotto. The range is very good value for money, the only downside being that if your child doesn't like a particular flavour or isn't very hungry then you have a lot of wastage.

3 stars

We really loved the unusual flavours and meal ideas from So Baby. Oscar liked the Chicken & Vegetable Casserole best. The meals looked good and tasted great to me, my only issue was the heating instructions meant the food was very very hot and we had to spend about 20 minutes trying to cool it down. Ready-made food is supposed to be a quick solution! I do understand when heating from frozen everything needs to be cooked to a high temperature for food safety, so I'd use So Baby again from chilled, but not from frozen.

Overall Winner Babylicious

The fact that there was only 1 point in it, reflects the high quality of all of the ready made baby meals we tested. Babylicious won with the flexible portion size which testers felt offered better value for money overall.
