Early Learning Center - Crazy Golf Set

Crazy golf set with 2 clubs, 4 balls and 5 crazy obstacles.

3 stars

We were all really excited about opening this toy, the pictures of the box displayed clearly what was inside and it looked like it would be great fun. My son kept asking for it to be opened and we were having to wait for a non-rainy day! There were no instructions to put together and play but the pictures on the box made it reasonably obvious as to what went where! The clubs were a little tricky to fit and 'Dad' was called in to use his strength to push components together. My son loved putting the stickers included on everything - it made setting the game up that extra bit interesting. Theéo liked to whack the balls about and onto / through the obstacles but didn't manage to fully grasp the rules. When he had a friend over it was great for getting them to turn take and encourage each other. It was suitable for my son's age (nearly 4) if close adherence to rules didn't matter. He was able to hold the club and hit the balls with ease and there was scope for improvement in his accuracy but he didn't feel like he was failing when he missed. He liked to play by himself as well as with me and could reset the obstacles if needed. He has asked for the golf set to be set up whenever he's played in the garden and tends to concentrate on it for abut 10-15 minutes before moving onto something else, a little longer with encouragement when I played too. You don't need to have lots of space to play, a small area of lawn is sufficient but spreading out the obstacles and having a well manicured lawn (our neighbours not ours!) did make the game play better. I would recommend this game to other Mum's if they had calmer children, too much enthusiasm when playing easily dislodged pieces from some of the obstacles but it was quite fun, can be played independently, was easy to clean and light to store too. Good value for money!

5 stars

The packaging made the game look very exciting - bright coloured packaging. Front of box shows the equipment set up, back of box shows the individual contents (useful for when assembling). No instruction leaflet as such, but the back of the box shows the items assembled, so we made it into a game with the kids of finding the correctly coloured bits that needed to be assembled together – just as much fun as playing the game! The contents included stickers for each Crazy Golf challenge & I let the kids put the stickers on, as part of the assembly fun! The game was easy to play and understand - each challenge is numbered 1 – 5 with a sticker, so it's good for learning to count. The girls loved playing it, we played outside and moved it inside when it started to rain. Age-wise, my 3 year old needed some initial guidance (how to hold the golf club, and the objective of each challenge...but then there was no stopping her! 5 year old adapted to the game immediately. We've played the game a lot and the girls like playing with their friends too. I would definitely recommend this game to friends of mine who are also Mums - some have already bought it! It is good value for money - I have seen cheaper versions, but I doubt they would last as long.

4 stars

When the package arrived the kids couldn't wait to get it open. The box was bright and cheerful and made the game look like great fun! I was disappointed that there were no instructions at all included but it was quite easy to put together. The kids played the game outside in the garden, however it was easy enough to play inside when the weather turned and although some space was needed it didn't need that much. The game was good fun although a little hard for my daughter who is 5, so I think it might be best for children a bit older as the "holes" also come apart quite easily too. At £12.50 though it is great value for money and I would definately recommend it as a great game that all the family can enjoy and take part in. (My two year old son made it his job to run around and collect any stray balls!)

My First Swingball

The first ever Pre-school Swingball range designed for children aged 3 years plus. Loose Loop Tether - patented spiral head and tether gives unrivalled smoothness of play. The opening loop design ensures resetting the game is simple and safe for the smallest of hands. Soft Sponge ball for Safe and active play. Unique checkerbats with tri-lattice construction means the bat is easy and safe to hold and lightweight. The large face profile of the bat provides an enlarged playing surface enabling pre-school children the possibility to learn to play the game and develop hand and eye co-ordination with ease. Revolutionary All Surface Base delivers easy storage, portability and is playable on any surface. Just fill the base with water or sand, or another available ballast and this anchors and stabilises the pole during play.

4 stars

My son was keen for this to be opened but rather for it being an large interesting box containing a toy than understanding what exactly was in it! The game had very clear instructions both with regard to fitting together and playing. An easy game to understand for older children but Théo didn't take on board the method of hitting one way and the other person the other, however he enjoyed using the racket to hit the ball and he and his friend started playing with their own set of rules quite happily. To play the game as it is designed I think it would be better for a slightly older child but Théo did enjoy it and hopefully he'll grow into playing. You don't need lots of space to play and it was suitable to be used on a variety of surfaces - we tried the patio, lawn and sand. The carrying case which you store everything in when not playing is brilliant, we're going to take it away with us on our camping holiday. Although a fantastic toy, I think Théo might still have been a bit young for it and costing almost £17, it might be something for grandparents to buy if your child has a summer birthday.

5 stars

The game looked appealing with its bright packaging. The swing ball set is enclosed in a lovely carry case (made of durable plastic). We had to actually prise the carry case off my 3 year old before we could get the game open (she thought that was the new toy!). It came with an enclosed leaflet providing clear instructions and diagrams of assemly and play. Very easy to assemble. Easy to play. There are 4 clear steps on how to play on the packaging surrounding the carry case. The girls enjoyed playing Swingball, my 3 year old gave it a try, but found it a little tricky on her own. However with encouragement and me physically helping her hit the ball (standing behind her), she found it great fun. The 5 year old was able to play with this toy independently. They have played it lots and we've left it assembled in the garden. You don't need loads of space - a small garden is ideal. Because the base does not require you to peg it into the ground, I suppose you could even play it indoors, if necessary – but you’ll need to mind the swinging bats & ball at your own risk! It was value for money for the quality. There are slightly cheaper versions at the major supermarkets, but this one was more ideally suited to younger children (smaller bats, foam ball, easy to assemble).

5 stars

This package also elicited much excitement in the house. The box was exciting and the kids loved that it came in its own carry-case. The swingball instructions were clear and easy to follow and we managed to set it up very quickly. The set itself didn't take up much space but quite a bit of space was needed to play the game. It was the perfect size for my 5 year old daughter and she loved playing it, especially with Mummy and Daddy and we have played it several times now. Its great exercise too with all that running! It also comes apart quite easily after playing so it can be stored in the carry-case which is a great idea! It is great value for money as it has so far provided literally hours of enjoyment and exercise for all of us! I would recommend this for anyone looking for fun for all the family!

Egg Race from Funky Moose

Frogs, clowns, heads, eggs ... you race against each other transporting with your balancing sticks different items. The main thing is that nothing that falls off! 2 balancing sticks (length approx 47cm), 22 balancing pieces.

4 stars

The packaging of this toy didn't appeal to Théo as much as the other toys, but I thought the cloth bag was stylish and attractive. I loved the fact that all the pieces were made of wood rather than plastic and asthetically this was my favourite of all the toys. It has been a real hit with Théo - he really enjoys balancing all of the different pieces, such as the frog or clown face and is making up his own courses across furniture and even attempting to balance pieces on Grandma! The set came with good clear instructions and even though it is described as a 'team game' Théo has had fun playing on his own or with one friend as well as a bigger group. The only slight downside to the Egg and Spoon race is the price - at £20.99 it is a pricey toy and one that I would have reserved buying for a special occassion such as Birthday or Christmas.

3 stars

This toy came in plain, understated packaging of a canvas bag, with red drawstring – but it suits the style of product – more traditional, wooden toy. Children were curious to see what was inside the bag. No actual assembly required, until you are ready to play the game. A bright yellow leaflet explains how to play the game. Rather detailed game instructions (I had to read them twice), and the game suggests you need 2 "groups" of players; however, we played it with just 2 children competing. The children liked playing the game, but found it quite tricky to balance more than 1 object on the balancing stick. We were able to play the game both indoors and out. I think this game is more suitable for children aged 5/6 and over (it says age 4), as the act of balancing objects on a rather long balancing stick takes some effort (the stick is longer & heavier than a spoon). The girls have played it thought as they're determined to get it right! I would recommend this game to other Mums, because it's an unusual slant on the "egg & spoon" race. However, it's trickier than the Sports Day game, so very energetic, impatient children may lose interest if they don't get the balancing act right! The Funky Moose catalogue contained some other intriguing games & toys which I am keen to try out & buy as presents!

2 stars

The packaging for "Egg Race" wasn't as exciting and involving as the other two games but still managed to rouse my 5 year olds curiosity. The game came ready to play and seemed quite simple. It took quite a bit of space as you needed a length of garden to hold the race in. My daughter found it quite hard to balance the objects for any length of time and quickly became frustrated. The game is a fantastic idea but maybe for slightly older children. I also worry that with so many little pieces the game may get lost easily with younger children. I also think the game is quite expensive at £20.99 although it is made of wood. Personally I wouldn't buy it but it might be a good gift for an older child.

Overall Winner My First Swingball

The results of the Outdoor Toys for children aged 3+ were very close with My First Swingball coming out on top by 1 point! All the reviewing families enjoyed playing with this toy and it was praised for its all round family appeal. Crazy Golf was loved by the families for being fun to play and great value for money and the Egg Race from Funky Moose was a firm favourite with the Laffort family in particular who especially loved the wooden playing pieces.

3 stars

The box was very exciting and interesting. It was different that you could see inside the box, without actually opening it and the little model dragons added to the anticipation. It was unusual to have a twelve sided dice, but it added to the game. The instructions were quite long winded and a little complicated. We had to keep referring back to them during the game. From an adult point of few the game seemed quite long and time consuming, but the kids loved it. We have played it a few times. It is the designs of the dragons that keep their attention. I would recommend it if your child was into dragons, but I think that they would lose their concentration if they didn't.

4 stars

The game looked very appealing - more to my son than my daughter though. I think this game is designed to appeal more as a boys game. The instructions were fairly clear, the children struggled with the instructions so would needed myself and their Dad to work them out. At first the game took a little while to understand but once got into it it was fab. The children loved playing this game and my son especially loved it the most. This game is a great family game once worked out the whole idea of it would need to play it a second time to really enjoy it. Both children have wanted to play it again and we enjoyed it more the second time. This game is different to any other game I've played and would recommend it to other mums - slightly pricey but well worth it!

4 stars

The game looked brilliantly appealing when we got it, I had to restrain the kids from ripping it open. It had clear instructions, they took a while to read and the kids got a bit bored waiting, so maybe I should have read them beforehand, but they were extrememly clear and easy to follow. The game was easy to understand once we got going. Although there were 9 dragon islands and only 8 models of dragons, we were a bit confused that the amphitheatre dragon couldn't be won. My 9 yr old boy loved playing it, the 14 yr old said he was bored repeatedly but still got very excited when he won a dragon! I actually quite enjoyed playing it. It was more interesting because you could go anywhere you liked and there wasn't a set pattern of track to follow. I think it was a really good family game, we all played it, Dad, Mam, 14 yr old boy and 9 yr old boy, even the 3 yr old joined in, playing with the dragon figures and rolling the dice. My 9 yr old boy got it out again straight away and played it himself. We have played it together again a couple of times, and intend to take it away on holiday. I think its good value for money - it had beautiful playing pieces and the board is put together lovely.

Game of Life Twist and Turns

With brand new Game of Life Twists and Turns, live life exactly the way you want - but just like in the real world, you can never be quite sure what is just around the corner! With no set route, you choose your own life path as you make your way around the board. The board is split into four different sections (Live It, Love It, Learn It, Earn It), so you can pick your own balance as to just how much you work, play or study to live your life to the max. Just like modern life, everything is unpredictable. Watch your behaviour or you could end up heading for an ASBO or try a stint on Big Brother, but will it help you or harm you? Success and happiness are no longer just measured by your bank balance - in Twists and Turns, a clever electronic unit debits or credits you with life points depending on quality not quantity. The electronic unit also keeps track of whether you are married and how many kids you have! Beat your opponents by having the richest, most fulfilling life, not just piling the pennies. And because you can try a different life path every time you play, no two games will ever be the same.

1 stars

For us this game was a bit of a let down. The box seemed quite exciting and my husband was looking forward to it as he used to play The Game of Life (original) it as a boy. We were all looking forward to it because of the electronic Life Pod. The instructions were not very clear, and even though we followed the instructions step by step we couldn't get the Pod to work properly - it was adding points when it was meant to be subtracting them. Seeing as the Life Pod is a vital part of the game we had to give up trying to play it because it wouldn't work.

5 stars

Very appealing game to my older child Sophé. The instructions were very easy to follow by all of us - no problems there. The game was easy to understand but had to go through it with my 8 year old a second time. The children really loved this game and really got into it. Fab family game with lots to do as you go through, didn't get bored with this game at all. We've played this over and over again my oldest asked to play this one more the the youngest. This is a must have family game - all families need one!

5 stars

The box was mildly appealing, my 9 yr old was very eager to open it, my 14 yr old wanted to know what the mechanical box was for. The instructions were very clear and very easy to understand. We picked up how to play the game very easily, once you got the hang of the box it was pretty easy. My kids loved playing it and Me and my husband loved it too! We couldn't get enough and played it again after the kids had gone to bed. I would say its a good family game if your family is older. My mother (oap) didn't enjoy it at all. We played this game about 8 times while we were on holiday, very addictive. I would definately recommend this. there are so many different aspects, its different every time.

Trivial Pursuit for Kids

mum & working chopice

Curious facts have never been so much fun! This special edition of Trivial Pursuit is specially designed for the younger player. Answer questions starting right back to when there was a big bang, through to how life is today and what the future may have in store. Subjects range from popstars to strange sports, rainforest and rivers to dinosaurs and videogames! Each question has a multiple choice answer, so even if you don't know you can have a guess! You'll be surprised at how much you really know and just at how amazing the world around you really is. The player that navigates their way around the board and completes their pie with the various category pieces of pie, wins the game.

This was our definite favourite! The packaging was interesting ( although personally I don't like orange, purple or blue would have been better). We loved the photos, they are more appealing than pictures . The instructions were clear and to the point. The game is simple but it is exciting, fun and competitive. Some of the questions were hard even for the adults, so we played in teams, which made it more fun. As well as having historical questions, there were questions about computers etc, so it was nice to have a combination of new and old. It also has the added bonus of being educational, so its a good excuse to stop doing housework and spend some time with the kids. We have played it a few times and I would definitely recommend it as a great family game.

4 stars

The box looked great, great pictures on the front and nice colour. The instructions were very simple to read and understand, we worked the game out straight away and it's a very easy game to understand. The children liked playing it but would need to be in teams as younger player would struggle with questions. It is a fantastic family game with lots of things to learn..having said that the children haven't really asked to play this one again, so perhaps it has more appeal for adults? I would recommend this game to other mums but would mention that playing in teams works better. Its great value for money.

2 stars

The box just looked a bit bland for us - it didn't build any excitment amongst the kids. The instructions were clear but we edited them a bit. For the adults to play too, we took out the multiple choice option. It was easy to understand because we've played normal trivial pursuit before. The kids thought it was ok, but got bored pretty quickly. I enjoyed playing it cos I like answering questions, but the family in whole found it a bit of a drag. We didn't play it more than once, but that could've been because we all got hooked on the Game of Life! Unless you know youe children are the sort that like quizzes and that kind of thing I probably wouldn't recommend this.

Overall Winner Triple joint winners - Game of Life Twists and Turns, Dragonology and Trivial Pursuit for Kids!

We've never had a triple winning set of reviews before, but this month the Mums have rated all games equally overall. However, their individual opinions were divided - The Game of Life scored only one point with the Engledow family (probably due to the faulty Life Pod) but was the firm favourite with the other two reviewing families. Trivial Pursuit wasn't so popular with the Wray family and Dragonology was praised by all families. All 3 have been judged as great family games for older children.
