We have created a special area for Lone Parents on Mum and Working - inspired by the huge response we have had about work that is suitable for one parent familes.
One of the biggest challenges facing all parents when thinking about going back to work, or starting work is - will it make me better off financially? The government have recognised the need to support parents when they go back to work both financially and in terms of practical help - detailed below is some of the practical and financial help on offer:
New Deal is a Government programme that aims to give unemployed people the help and support they need to get into work. There are several New Deal programmes in place, including the New Deal for Lone Parents.
New Deal for Lone Parents is a voluntary programme specifically designed to help lone parents into work. It offers a package of support to help you move towards a more secure future for you and your children.
If you choose to take advantage of what's available by joining New Deal for Lone Parents, a personal adviser will take you through the steps to find and apply for jobs. Your adviser will also offer practical advice and help about finding childcare and training. Your adviser will also be able to tell you about how benefits will be affected when you start work and help you apply for any in work benefits or tax credits.
You can join New Deal for Lone Parents if you are bringing up children as a lone parent, if your youngest child is under 16 years old and you are not working, or working less than 16 hours per week.
