Read how La Jolie Ronde Licensee Kate Speirs successfully adapted her home life to create a flourishing business.
Name : Kate Speirs
Location : Harpenden
Hours of Work: 2 and a bit days per week, school hours, term time
Family : 3 daughters aged 6, 4 and 2.
What is your background?
I studied French and Spanish at Salford University and spent nearly two years working in France and Spain before returning to the UK to work in international marketing and communications. I was head of communications for a global accounting organisation when I started my family.
Was there a reason you went back to work?
I continued to work part time between pregnancies but found it increasingly difficult to meet the demands of the family and work not to mention the rising costs of childcare! So I decided to look for something more suited to my new circumstances.
How did you go about finding a family-friendly job?
I was interested in using my languages and loved seeing how quickly my eldest daughter picked up the words I taught her. I started by teaching Spanish to a group of my friends’ children and they loved it and so did I! I then started to investigate teaching materials on the web and discovered La Jolie Ronde. It seemed the perfect solution for me as I wanted to teach both French and Spanish and they had materials for both. I could also teach during the school day and the class plans would save me a lot of time which is very valuable with a young family.
How often do you work?
I teach classes between 10am and 4pm on a Monday – starting with pre-school classes in the morning, lunchtime primary school classes, pre-school again in the afternoon and then an after school class.
I also teach lunchtime classes at schools on a Tuesday and Wednesday and I teach an afternoon pre-school class on a Friday..I have two tutors who run additional lunchtime classes for me at two other schools. In addition to the teaching, I prepare for my classes (mainly on a Sunday afternoon/evening) and I catch up on administration in the evenings when the girls are in bed!
How much did your La Jolie Ronde Franchise cost you?
It was really reasonable compared to other child type businesses available in the market place and cost around £600 which I was able to pay in installments. The only other thing I had to purchase was a bond of £150 which is fully refundable.
What did that investment buy?
A really comprehensive bundle of things! A year’s teaching license; public liability insurance to cover all my classes; training on the methodology with a certificate on completion and unlimited access to the support team at head office; a taster session pack; a full set of course materials and lesson plans including full colour flashcards; a huge marketing pack crammed with ideas and suggestions on how to launch and grow your business, including leaflets, posters and sample letters to send to schools, parents and the press; advertising on the La Jolie Ronde website; my own personal e-mail address.
And most importantly, the use of the La Jolie Ronde name which I have found to be a real door opener with schools. It is a well recognised and respected organisation.
Do you get good support and training from the La Jolie Ronde Head Office?
Yes the support is excellent. I know I can call anytime and speak to one of the team. There are also annual regional meetings where we get to mingle with other Licensees to share teaching methods and attend training sessions covering topics such as behaviour management, how to introduce role plays etc. The team at Head Office also update us on what’s new and is being planned for the future.
As well as the head office team, we have the support of a regional manager which is really helpful to share ideas in your own region.
Do you advertise your classes?
I advertise in some local directories but I find it is much more effective to use the promotional leaflets and fliers supplied by La Jolie Ronde and put them up at local playgroups and church halls. You also can’t beat getting schools or playgroups to put a note in their newsletters or in the children’s bookbags to advertise classes.
How has your business developed and grown?
My business has grown far more quickly than I anticipated. I started teaching with La Jolie Ronde in January 2009 with a class at a local church hall and one primary school. With some marketing calls, leaflet drops and word of mouth, the demand for my classes grew very quickly. A year and a half later, I have over 150 pupils at 5 primary schools, one nursery and a church hall. I also have two tutors who I took on to meet the extra demand. Most of my classes at primary schools have 12 pupils in and some have waiting lists.
What is the best thing about La Jolie Ronde for you? Why are they different?
The quality of the teaching materials is excellent – the songs and rhymes are great fun and the kids love them. The class plans work really well and the supporting materials such as flash cards, activity books and CDs really give that little bit extra that other classes don’t seem to offer.
It also fits perfectly with my lifestyle. I can do as few or as many classes as I want and I can fit them into the school day.
Would you recommend becoming a La Jolie Ronde Licensee to other mums?
Absolutely. Im able to work as much or as little as I like therefore I can be totally flexible. It is great fun and very rewarding and fits very well with being a Mum too. The kids just love learning languages and it is so rewarding to see them just soak it up!
What makes a perfect candidate?
Language skills aside (which are a given), the perfect candidate loves working with children and having fun and has good organisational skill.
