Secrets of growing your business from the kitchen table: make the most of being a mum
Some days, it can be incredibly frustrating running a business and being a mum. You struggle to focus on the business while being constantly interrupted, and end up only getting down to work when the kids are in bed. Read this article from Mumpreneur guru Antonia Chitty to find out just how being a mum can give you an advantage and lead to business breakthroughs.
Each time I’ve been forced to sit back and slow down due to pregnancy I’ve made a break through. My first baby started me on the whole self employment route: without her I probably would never have questioned my pattern of work. And then in 2006 when I was on maternity leave with my second child I wrote my first book, a Guide to Promoting your Business. That started me on a whole new career path and allowed me to achieve a goal that I’d not really owned up to at that point – to write books and get published.
My third pregnancy was difficult and I spent a lot of time sitting down, which is when I started blogging. I didn’t realise it at that point, but this was a great investment of my time. I developed Family Friendly Working which is now a great ‘magazine’ style blog AND a source of regular income for me. With three children I’ve been restructuring the business over the last 9 months so there are more products and it is less dependent on my time.
Without each period of enforced slowness I wouldn’t have written books or adapted and developed my business model. If you feel frustrated at just how slowly your business is growing, use the time that you have to plan. Once your child starts playgroup or school you’ll find that you can make amazing leaps forward from all that planning time.
