I hope with this award to inspire other mums on balancing work with families, it is important to have flexible working to fit around families’ aswell as supporting organisations/communities we work with."

Sabina Iqbal is working mum and deaf mum of two children (daughter Samaria age 4, son Areeb age 2 and 5 months old and is expecting 3rd baby, due anytime in the next few weeks). She works as Sensory Team Manager for one of the London boroughs and manage 8 members of staffs and is currently on maternity leave.

She completed her third year BA (Hons) degree in International Social Work in 2001. This included doing a three months international research project 'Deaf Parenting: Raising a Child - An initial study on Deaf parents with children aged 0-11yrs' in USA, as part of her dissertation. She has been involved with various projects as a freelance trainer/consultant on Ethnic Deaf issues, and freelance reporter/TV presenter for Deaf programmes.   

She is Chair/Founder of Deaf Parenting UK is the first ever charity and small national organisation run by Deaf parents for Deaf parents, representing the needs of deaf parents in the UK, who are 90% likely to have hearing children. She also worked in a voluntary capacity as a Chair of Deaf Parenting UK. 

Her success includes:  Sabina wrote a book on Pregnancy & Birth: A Guide for Deaf Women (2004), which has been launched at the DPUK’s Deaf Parenting Conference 2004. This book is the first ever of its kind for Deaf parents in UK and possibly in the world.  In her spare times, she has been also busy, over the years, raising the profile of Deaf Parenting UK’s Profile by Presentations& information stalls at various local, national and international conferences to raise awareness about the needs of Deaf Parents and issues they face in accessing to services and the work of Deaf Parenting UK.  She was also involved in the creation of Deaf Parenting UK Website (2007)
www.deafparent.org.uk which is seen as a central resources for Deaf parents and professionals working with them including useful links to Deaf organisations and mainstream parenting organisations.
