1 stars

I wasn't keen on the packaging of this product, I thought it was a bit boring and did not like the tub it came in. It was easy to apply but I did not like the fact that it was in a tub not a tube as don't feel this is as hygienic. The main thing I didn't like was the smell, found it unpleasant and did not want my baby to smell of it. Did not find the greenish/ yellow colour appealing at all - quite the opposite, consistency was ok though. I also noticed when next changed nappy that it had gone "bitty" on Lielle's skin. I did not feel that it protected from nappy rash. Overall I felt it was very expensive for the size, I didn't like the aroma or packaging and it wasn't as good as my normal nappy salve.

4 stars

I quite liked the look of the box due to the colours of the wording, and that it clearly states 'soothe and calm' which would stand out to me on a shelf. This product didn't actually have any instructions on the box or the tub. Although it is pretty simple to most to know where to apply a cream and when, all of the other products I have seen have at least a simple instruction on them. It came in a nice sized tub, although with a screw lid, which I need to make sure that I unscrew ready to use as otherwise Jessica will have crawled away by the time I opened it. It was a nice cream, not too runny or thick and rubbed in nicely, but with a strange slightly off putting smell, which to me seems like an 'organic' smell! I do think that this soothed Jessica, as she had some slight redness when I used this, which had disappeared by the end of the day. I would continue to use this to protect Jessica from any further redness. Apart from the smell, I did prefer this cream to others I have used, especially for the consistency. If the product didn't smell like it does, I would be recommending it to others. I think that it is slightly expensive, as I could see the tub running out quite quickly with daily use.

4 stars

I liked the packaging of this balm and it would have caught my eye on a shop shelf. It came with clear instructions for use and was very easy to apply, didn't need to use very much. I absolutely loved this balm. The consistency was lovely as was the aroma. I felt a little goes a long way which is great. It did soothe Thomas's skin and worked well to protect him from nappy rash. Although I thought it was a fantastic product it was over my budget for what I would normally spend on this sort of item and so has lost a point for being a little bit too expensive.

Mothercare Natural Softie - Organic Nappy Balm

Formulated with organic calendula and anti-irritant canola to help soothe and protect. Dermatologically tested and Hypo-allergenic. Peanut oil and allergen free. Suitable from birth. Ideal for sensitive skin

4 stars

I felt the packaging was a bit boring and nothing special. However good size tube for carrying around. It came with basic but clear instructions. Very easy to apply and easy to use, went on smoothly. Did not leave a greasy residue, was easy to wipe off fingers after use. Would have preferred flip top lid as can be tricky putting lid back on after use when dealing with baby too. Great consistency, colourless and odourless. Very nice and pleasant to use. Unfortunately Lielle did get a little bit red, so didn't work brilliantly. Was more pleasant to use than my usual product, but did not work as well. I would recommend it as a cream for dry skin patches; I would use it in the changing bag when out and about as doesn't stick to fingers after use and good it is in a tube not a tub. Very good value for money.

2 stars

Really liked the box that this tube came in, bright green sides and lettering on the front and a bright picture of a flower. This is something that if I'd seen in Mothercare I'd want to pick up and try. Clear directions for use on the box as well as the tube, useful if you don’t keep the box. The tube has a screw on lid which isn't the easiest thing to un-do and do-up if you have a wriggly baby and the product spills out of the tube if you slightly squeeze it. A lot of the ingredients are oils, which made the balm come out of the tube firstly as oil and then with a bit of cream which could be messy. It had a slight strange smell, but otherwise didn't really smell of anything. I don’t think I'd recommend this product unless I knew of someone who was looking for something hypoallergenic, peanut oil and allergen free, as this is clearly stated on the front of the product. The price of the product seems quite reasonable for the amount of product.

5 stars

This balm had nice packaging and clear instructions about how to use it. It was very easy to apply and I really liked the consistency of this one and the fragrance. It didn't smell very strong and was very easy to apply. This balm protected Thomas from nappy rash and soothed his skin. Out of all three this was my favourite and the one I would buy again in the shops.

Maclaren Beginnings Protecting Nappy Change Balm

Baby and mum will have a happy time with the Aloe, Shea and Cocoa butter infused with soothing organic Lavender and calming German Chamomile to nourish, soothe and protect baby's delicate skin.

5 stars

Really like the packaging, it looked clean but not boring. It was a good size and I liked the flip top lid which is ideal and easy to open and close one handed. It came with good clear instructions and was lovely to apply. It smelt gorgeous with a strong smell, so could really smell it. A relaxing, indulgent smell which did not stick to fingers afterwards. I was concerned that as it smelt so strong it would irritate Lielle's skin but it actually got rid of the little bit of redness that she had. The Maclaren cream was an absolute pleasure to use, beautifully and hygienically packaged. I almost began to look forward to nappy changes for the chance to use it and smell it again as so relaxing and pleasant. It is very expensive so I don't think I could buy it on a regular basis, but as an indulgent treat for you and baby or as a gift it's great.

4 stars

There isn't anything particularly eye catching about this packaging and it wouldn't have caught my eye if I was looking for something on a shelf. There were good instructions on the back of the tube on how much to apply and when. The tube was easy to open and close and the product came of the tube nicely so that it didn't go everywhere or get the lid covered. It is quite a thick balm and rubbed in nicely. The balm contains lavender which is quite strong smell, so you need to like lavender to enjoy using product. As Jessica doesn't have nappy rash I couldn't say whether this would soothe, although it did make her bottom nice and soft and smelt nice. I would normally use an antiseptic cream if needed, but this product is nice and moisturising. It is something that I would recommend other parents could try (if they liked lavender), although I could not say whether it would help with nappy rash, but it is definitely moisturising. A little of the balm goes a long way and therefore although it could seem expensive to some people it would probably last longer then other products that are available.

3 stars

I didn't like the look of this product - it looked clinical and cold not something I would necessarily notice on a shelf when looking for a product for my son. It came with clear instructions, but I didn't find it as easy to apply as the other two products. I liked the consistency and the fragrance was lovely. It did protect from nappy rash and soothe skin, but I felt it was too expensive for what it was and based on price I wouldn't recommend it to other parents.

Overall Winner Maclaren Beginnings Protecting Nappy Change Balm

The Maclaren Beginnings product has come out top in this test; reviewers loved the fragrance, thought the flip-top lid was a great idea for one-handed opening and although expensive felt the balm offered good value for money overall. Green People's 'Soothe & Calm' Baby Balm divided opinion. Two of our testers liked the product and felt it worked well, but two testers really were not keen on the smell. The Mothercare 'Natural Softie' balm was a close runner up to the Maclaren Beginnings balm; our testers thought it was brilliant value for money.

Insey Winsey Spider

A simple counting and shapes game Learn about counting and shapes with this best-selling game based on the popular nursery rhyme. Be the first to move your spider up the drainpipe before it starts to rain. This classic Orchard Toys game now includes two games in one for even better value! Suitable for 2-4 players, age 3-6 years.

4 stars

Bright colours and fun pictures on packaging, looked really good, kids were excited to play it. Especially as they are familiar with the rhyme which made the game more appealing to them. Good, clear instructions, easy to play, also liked the fact that the Insey Winsey Spider song was on the box. Children really enjoyed playing it, it's a varient of snakes and ladders which they have, and made a nice change. Some games were really quick which was a good thing as it gave the chance for different winners to emerge, which made it more exciting and prevented boredom setting in. They really enjoyed shaking the dice in the little red cup. This was a good idea as it made it extra fun and also helps little hands throw the dice well. I thought it was a really good educational game on a few different levels. it was good for counting practice, for learning that games have rules that have to be adhered to, for learning to wait their turn, and also for learning that things can suddenly change but that one just needs to try again (ie. when have to go down the drainpipe to the bottom again) - A good LIFE LESSON! I enjoyed playing this game with them too. I would recommend this game to other parents, the fact that it can also be played with the shapes as well as with the numbers means that younger children can play the game without too much supervision and help with counting. A good fun game. The kids practice life skills and counting without realising they are doing so. It was good value for money as it did entertain the children, but perhaps a shade too expensive, it was fun, but the pieces and boards are fairly simple and could have been sturdier for this price.

5 stars

The box for Insey Winsey Spider looks great with brightly colourful spiders on it and we couldn't wait to find out what was inside. There are clear instructions inside, in numerous languages as to how to play the two games, one a counting game and the other a shapes game. The only parts that need putting together were the boards which came in two parts, but are in separate colours for each player so Jamie was able to put the correct parts together. Both games are easy to understand, with a 'snakes and ladders' theme to them. Jamie got the hang of throwing the dice and moving the spider up the squares although he needed a bit of help with moving the right number of places and moving the piece from the right place, although after a few games he was clearly learning and enjoyed winning! Both Jamie and Daniel loved playing this game. The whole family has played the game together as there are four spiders and boards. It definitely helps the boys to understand counting, even though it is only up to six, and moving the right number of spaces, it also helps teach the names of many different shapes. Jamie especially has wanted to play the game over and over again. I would recommend this game to other parents as a fun educational game, although mainly for the 3-5 age range. I think that £8 is a reasonable amount to pay for this game, with the great boards, spider pieces, die and shaker.

First impressions with this game were great - the box was lovely and Jack was excited about seeing what was inside. It came with excellent instructions and was easy to understand. Unfortunately once set it up I had to convince my son to play with me! When we did play Jack chose to use the number dice rather than the shape dice as he enjoys numbers. I don't think he enjoyed falling down the drainpipe, it made him feel like he was doing something wrong. I liked the game and thought it was ok but maybe didn't have enough to it to keep my 4 year old's attention at this stage. We haven't played it again. Overall it is a good price for a quality made game, but unfortunately wasn't a success with my family.

Alphabet Snap

Classic card game to help teach little ones to recognise letters. Suitable for age 2-6 years.

1 stars

I didn't think the packaging was really that appealing, but the kids were keen to play because it was a new game. The pictures on the cards were quite boring and not particularily well illustrated and a strange choice at times. eg. V illustrated with a Vase (I felt a bit obscure for kids - violin would have been better choice and kids could not really tell what the picture was of). The game was easy to play and understand but the girls were bored playing it. There was a lack of matching cards (only 2 as compared to standard playing cards where there are 4 of each card.) This meant that in 2 games there was only one "snap" per game. Meira and Kalila lost interest quickly and they could not be persuaded to play this game more than the couple of times that we did. (I did try). I wouldn't recommend it to other parents, I thought the illustrations were boring and drab and there are much better, similar things on the market.

4 stars

Jamie wanted to get straight into the bright orange box as he was unsure as to what might be in there and ripped the cardboard in the process. He liked the pictures on the front, which show what is enclosed in the box. It could do with better packaging such as a plastic box, as the box will not last long in my household! There are clear instructions on the back of the box, which actually give you four ways of playing with the cards. It isn't just the two variations of 'snap' you can play, but word games and using letter sounds with the cards, great to give people idea as to what else they can do with the cards. Jamie loved playing snap. As each cards has a letter as well as a picture this made it easier for Jamie as he initially started with matching the pictures then I encouraged him to match the letters. When he gets older he will be able to use the cards to make words and start using the sounds. It was a great, fun game and we were also able to get Daniel involved. I enjoyed playing snap with the boys, and it was a good 'family' time. It is a game that also involves learning too. I am able to start teaching the boys the letters and the sounds of the words on the cards and when they get older I will be able to introduce different games to help them learn. Both Jamie and Daniel have wanted to play this especially as it involves mum playing to and also as they can shout out 'snap'. I think that the cards are a great easy way to help parents teach their children the alphabet, letters and sounds and the price the cards are selling for is value for money as they are clear and a good size, bigger than normal playing cards.

5 stars

I thought this looked really fun before we'd even opened it but Jack wasn't terribly bothered initially. The game came with instructions on how to use the cards to play different games which was good. Jack didn't really like playing this game, he thought it was boring and it was a struggle to get him to play it. I thought it was a fun, easy game though and great for popping in your bag when travelling. Although we haven't played the game lots of times I think it is great value for money and would recommend it to other parents. Other children may like it a lot more than mine!

See and Spell

A great introduction to letters and words. Eight x two-sided spelling boards featuring the picture of the imprinted word. Comes with 70 letters and a storage box with lid.

3stars

This game looked very appealing, nice solid looking wooden boards and letters and colourful. It did not come with instructions, but it was easy to understand what to do though. The children were initially very enthusiastic to play it, but Meira did each word once then got bored. There was no challenge to it for her. She can read but did not have to try as she could guess what the word was from the picture. There should really have been some sort of cover to slide over the pictures so they could be hidden until the child had read the word - that would have made it more educational too. Kalila (who is 3) cannot read and probably enjoyed it more and will want to play with it a lot more as she approached it as a puzzle where she had to find and fit the letter shapes in to the correct 'cut out' on the wooden board. It's educational from the point of view of making the spelling of those particular words more familiar through repetition/seeing the same words every time the game is played and familiarising younger kids with letters but could have been improved. I would recommend it for a younger age group and do feel it is pricey considering that it's scope and potential. A great looking game but I would not pay this much money for it.

5 stars

Both Jamie and I couldn't wait to open the box to get the puzzles out, bright colours on the wooden boards and letters inside. It all comes in a wooden box with a plastic sliding lid, great for keeping it all together. I was slightly worried when I saw all of the letters (70) as we always seem to lose bits of puzzles and games in our house. But I was really pleased when I read that all of the parts are guaranteed for life and will be replaced. There were no instructions with the game, but it is self-explanatory with ten double sided puzzle picture spelling boards with letters to fit on. Jamie knew exactly what to do and started completing the boards straight-away. He really liked completing the boards and was really pleased with himself that he could do them and move onto another to complete. I enjoyed watching Jamie completing the puzzles and helping him if he got stuck, such as with u's and n's. As Jamie gets older this game will help him spell words. He has wanted to play this each day and as there are twenty words he doesn't get bored as he only does a few at a time. This is a great puzzle game with storage box and is a great educational game for children as young as Jamie and as they get older. I initially thought that this was too expensive, but the colours and boards are great and this would be a wonderful present for someone.

4 stars

My 4 year old was so excited to get this game open and start playing with it! The game was really easy to understand and although it didn't come with instructions it was pretty self-explanatory. Jack loved playing with this initially. He spent all afternoon finding letters and making the words. It's a great game for a child of his age. I thought this was a great educational game, perfect for 4-5 year olds and something one child can play with on their own or with you or with other children. We have now played it lots of times. I'd recommend it to other mums as it easily helps children to learn letters and has easy words with the pictures there for prompts. The only downside for me was price, £20 is quite steep for one game but once I'd seen how much my son loved it, I think it's well worth the money and would make a great present for a preschooler. This would have been a five out of five game if it had been slightly cheaper.

Overall Winner Insey Winsey Spider & See and Spell

Very close test results for these games, with two games being chosen as joint winners. Our reviewers loved Insey Winsey Spider, praising the eye-catching, colourful packaging and game design. The families felt the game offered enough challenge and was educational whilst being fun, only one of the reviewing children wasn't so keen on playing it. The reviewing mums all thought See and Spell was a quality, appealing game which their children enjoyed playing. Although it was the most expensive game tested reviewers felt it offered value for money and would be a great gift item, the Bradley family liked the look of the game but felt the educational aspect was not challenging enough for their five and a half year old. Alphabet Snap divided opinion - two testers thought it was a good value game which was fun to play but the Bradley family were not keen at all.
