Mum's View

Name: Beaty
Location: London
Family: Jake (3) and Seb (1 ½)
How often do you host teagroups? Once a week - Monday afternoons

How does the job fit around your family life?
It is no problem as Jake is at nursery on a Monday and I am pottering around at home with Seb anyway

How much time do you commit?
2 hours a week - 3-5pm

Where do you carry out your work?
In my own house.

How much space do you have?
We have a 3 bedroom house with a garden. Our sitting room and dining room are knocked through which allows for extra space downstairs.

Do you need a car?
Not for hosting a tea group at home!

Do you advertise?
No this is a voluntary job and the NCT inform new Mums in my direct local area about the group themselves and just point them in my direction. I do generally ring Mums and introduce myself before they come over for the first time as I think it helps make them feel reassured

Do you enjoy it?
Yes! It is such a good way of supporting new Mums at a time when they might be feeling lonely. If you have worked all the time before having a baby then its unlikely you will have a lot of local friends who have babies already. Although you might have friends you can drive to there is nothing like being able to walk round to a friends for a cup of tea and a chat. Also, its a good way to be able to tell people about local playgroups

How did you hear about the job?
When I attended a tea group myself

Do you get support/training?
You don't get formal training, but you do get support

Are there any downsides to the role?
No

Would you recommend this opportunity to other Mums?
Yes definitely - its a fantastic way of getting to know other Mums in your local area and supporting them at a time when they might be feeling a bit lonely.
